Chances for UChicago (primarily) and schools of comparable selectivity?

Hi, I'm a senior, white male. Here are my stats, etc.:

I have taken 4 AP Exams thus far (Euro, USHist, Psych, Chem) and received three 5's and a 4. I will take 10 more this year (Lit&Comp, Lang&Comp, Macro, Micro, Physics C (both tests), USGov, CompGov, Stats, Calc BC) and at the risk of sounding presumptuous, will likely receive 5's and 4's in a similar proportion.

I have a 4.0 unweighted and something above that weighted because of the 7 semesters of AP. Currently I have all A's as well (schedule=5th year Spanish, AP Phys, AP Stat, AP Gov, AP Calc BC, Indep. Study of AP Econ, AP Lit&Comp).

I am ranked #1 (tied) in my class of about 375.

ACT: 34 (36E, 33M, 36R, 32S) and waiting on the Sep. 8 results.
SAT: 2150 (I don't remember the specifics) and I might take it again.

I am a member of the varsity Quiz Bowl team, and have been for 2 years now. I played football until this year. I volunteer several hours per week outside of school. I am also a member of NHS and a couple service clubs in school. I was an exchange student in South America this past summer for my Spanish class. I was also selected by my school's gifted facilitator to attend a leadership camp this summer with approximately 60 kids from around the state. I feel like I'm forgetting something but this is a rushed chance thread, so I'm not too worried about it.

AP Scholar with Honor
National Merit Commended

I will have two awesome rec letters from teachers and likely one very good one from a counselor. My essays will be fantastic most likely, as writing is probably my strongest asset.

Chances for UChi? Comparably selective schools?

It’s also worth mentioning, I suppose, that I have taken essentially every AP and ‘advanced’ (honors, more or less) course that I can when they have been available.

I’m also doing Early Action most likely, which I failed to mention earlier.

nothing? Bump.

SAT score falls short. You should take it again and aim for 2250+

Really? Isn’t UChi a score choice school? Am I fundamentally misunderstanding what that means?

Bumping because after the Sept. ACT, my updated score is 35 (35,35,34,34). Come on, somebody chance it.

I think it`s a high-match…scores are pretty on par with the school. I think you could probably also get into Northwestern and Columbia.

Columbia is actually another school high on my list. Chicago, Columbia, Stanford are probably my top 3 out-of-state. I’ll probably apply to Northwestern as well. As far as Chicago schools though, it’s no where near UChi for me. Thanks for the response CE527M!

being male is probably your only downfall, otherwise I would say Uchicago is in the bag.

My friend got in with a 4.0, 34 ACT, and only one AP, along with two varsity sports and the president of two clubs - however, that’s a female

Thanks for the answer! It’s good to know that. I am shocked that one AP was enough. It seems like a school focused intensely on academic rigor. Although if that’s all that was available to her, then never mind.

I echo that shock. UChicago really emphasizes academic rigor. I hope your friend was able to transition well from taking 1 AP throughout high school to UChicago’s challenging courses.

Edit: that sounded kind of mean. I’m sure she’s a smart person by her ACT score and hardworking from her extracurriculars. I just meant to say that the first year might be very different from her usual academic work.

I don’t think it sounded too terribly mean. The jump from standard high school courses to courses at an academically prestigious school would be a fairly large one. Hell, I expect that if I am able to go there, the jump from 6 AP’s and a high-level language class to classes there will be noticeable.

“I would say Uchicago is in the bag.”
???

Chicago, Columbia and Stanford: Reach
They are reach schools for almost every unhooked applicant.

Essays, essays and essays if you want to go to UChicago.

So now a couple votes for very good chance and one for reach. Thanks guys. Keep 'em coming.

There’s no way to calculate it, but let’s assume you have a 50/50 shot–a very good chance. That could still be considered a “reach” since you aren’t certain of getting in. People say that those top schools are reaches for everyone, so you can simultaneously be a reach and have a much better than average chance.
