Hi everyone,

So, I've been stressing out about my chances of being accepted into UCI through their Psychology & Social Behavior major. Brief backstory: I used to attend a private university (in CA/christian) but was dismissed due to bad grades. After that, I've been attending a CC and been able to achieve good grades. Originally, I wanted to apply for TAG but it came to my notice, that because of my previous university grades, I wouldn't be able to. Nonetheless, I'm going to still try but I'm highly doubt my chances for TAG. So...my gpa from the private university is about 1.6-- and the current gpa at my CC is 3.7-- overall, my gpa drops to 2.4. I'm going to apply this upcoming fall, but I'm unsure to which courses from my private university tranfers over. On top of that, I'm teetering on about 73 units with all of the courses combined. With just CC units (53 units). Now, what I want to know is [1] if the failed courses at my previous university transfers over to the UC and count as credits (in which affects the max credit limit, [2] I repeated some classes at my CC not knowing that the courses at my previous university transferred over to a UC, so does the grade get replaced with the failed ones or how does that work? Also, even with the good grades from my previous university, I repeated courses because I thought they didn't transfer over, so how does that work? [3] what are my chances for UCI acceptance? [4] Does UCI base decisions off of gpa when I apply, or my last semester? [5] How do I find out which courses transfer over from my university to UCI?

**I am going to get 3 letters of reccomendations (2 from UCI alumns and 1 from my work). I work as a teacher/private tutor for kindergarteners-second graders and students with learning disabilities. I've volunteered at hospitals in the child care unit. But that's about as far as my EC goes.

I'm pretty much in a position where it's really confusing and I've been working hard. I just don't know what's next or how everything is supposed to work. I've talked with my counselors (they give me different information), I've talked with the UCI administration, with my previous university admin...and they can't give me clear answers. I know it's confusing and I've taken stupid paths, but can anyone enlighten me a bit so I can lift some stress off my shoulders?

Thank you in advance.

They will look at your team elective GPA, so if you are sitting out at 2.4 then it is very unlikely that you would be able to get into UC Irvine this fall. They do look at upward trends, so your grades at your current school obviously help you a lot, but in my opinion I just think your overall is just too low.

You can TAG if you choose to, but they won’t accept your TAG if your GPA is not a 3.4 overall.

Whether or not your classes from your first college transfer is just one of those things that only Irvine can answer. You can try to do a Google search and see if there’s any articulation agreements between the two schools. Sometimes there are and you can find them by doing a little digging.

Classes that you have retaken are a little tricky, because they are not going to be direct equivalents. so for example if at your first school you took English composition and then you took English composition at your second school more than likely both grades will be factored into your GPA, but you would only receive unit/ subject credit for one of the courses.

I’m really not trying to be overly negative, but I think you really are backed into a corner at this point. It seems it’ll be a bit of an uphill battle for you to transfer to a UC. You really need to take more courses to improve your GPA enough, but by taking too many classes you make yourself ineligible. Kind of a Catch-22 unfortunately.

Edit: Oops, cross posted with 2016Candles.

I’m not familiar with UCI transfer stuff, but I will take a crack at it:

You are free to file a TAG, however your GPA is going to count you out. According to <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors; , UCI requires a 3.4 by Summer 2014, which has already passed. If you still want to, the website to do so is <a href=“UC Transfer Admission Planner - UC TAP | UC Admissions”>https://uctap.universityofcalifornia.edu/students/ . You must also submit a regular application in November.

Yes, your previous university courses will count. I’d double check the max you can transfer with, because you CANNOT go over.

I have no idea how UCs will look at the repeated grades. I think it might be the same process for re taking CC classes, that the bad grade is replaced by the good grade, but I really don’t know.

Someone more familiar with UCI acceptance rates can answer this.

All UCs take in to account the Fall semester grades. However, Spring grades are a part of the admission contract, so you cannot slack in that semester.

Assist.org is the website for CC transfers, so you just have to guess and see what would transfer from your old university.

Also, the UCs do not accept letters of recommendation. The specifically ask for applicants not to send supplemental information.

I will also leave this: <a href=“Apply | Office of Undergraduate Admissions | UCI”>Apply | Office of Undergraduate Admissions | UCI; . Is there any way to bring your GPA up past a 3.0 in this semester? Otherwise you might not be eligible.
