Chances for UCLA and Berkeley

I know these schools are very competitive and i wanted to see what you guys thought my chances of transferring were (I applied to some of the easier UCs as backup plans). I am a California community college student with igetc, and all major coursework done for my major which is history. My gpa was a 3.4 and i have worked incredibly hard to bring it up to a 3.78 by the time i transfer. I am not in the honors program and if i were to get into either school i would be very proud. Also, just wondering, there were four prerequisite classes for my major that ucla wants, if i have extra courses (say seven) from that list of pre reqs, will that look better to them?

well done bringing your gpa up so high, its now in the rank of competitive gpas.

id say you have a chance for any UC, assuming you have good ECs.

if it was all academics and no ECs than things might be different, but im sure youll be able to get in any UC, just maybe not all of their majors.

@ilovecali, it definitely can’t hurt. I’ve asked my counselors the same question, but they feel that it doesn’t matter either way and is irrelevant. However, I believe that since the UC’s review all of your college coursework, it certainly should look like you have developed a legitimate interest in that major. They will notice, and like I said, if anything, it will help.

3.4 is pretty low for Cal/UCLA honestly not sure what your major is but if it’s business/econ/communication you have little shot.

or did i misunderstand you and you have a 3.78 after fall semester?

Oh oops forgot to chance. ilovecali, I’d say you’re in at both ar at the very least, one of them. If you had a 3.78 at the end of fall (I’m assuming that’s what you meant because of how exact it is), then you should have a great shot at both schools.

Yeah it’s not just prereq, it’s “demonstrated interest in the major.” If you were a science then getting prereqs would be essential, but for history if you weren’t able to do the prereqs (which you had) but had done other history courses that would still look good. Additional history courses is really great for you.

Ahh I forgot about that, Cantabilen is right. You clearly have demonstrated interest in your major! That should definitely help then.

Thanks for all the replies. Been busy lately and have not had time to check the responses. Current gpa is 3.78 (3 B’s, one in pre calculus which was 5 units). I’m anxious to hear back from the schools. Another question (I’ll ask my counselor this), if i do not get into LA/berkeley, can i stay at my community college and transfer after a third year with TAG so long as i keep my UC transferrable units under 90? Kinda funny, out of high school i could not get into all the cal states i applied to and even if i don’t get into UCLA or Berkeley, knowing that i applied to them and had a chance is very uplifting

You can’t TAG to UCLA/UCB but you can definately do a 3rd year and transfer to another UC with TAG.

Honestly though if you have enough units to transfer you should do it

You can TAG any school you want other than UCB/UCLA.

You may be able to do TAP for UCLA. It’ll depend on where you go to school, and if your school has a TAP Honors Program.

Also, with a 3.78, and as a history major, you have very good shots at both UCB and UCLA. I doubt you’ll have to stay another year to get into one of those.

My bad, meant TAP not TAG. I’ve applied to 6 UC schools- LA, Berkeley, SD, SB Riverside, and Irvine. Visited the UCLA campus and loved every aspect of it (not to mention largest history department in the country). I also liked the San Diego campus and i plan to drive 426 miles to Berkeley for my spring break lol. Anyways, last thing, my fall 2009 semester i took eighteen units (one of the classes was honors history and got an A). This was the first time in my life i got straight A’s (never in elementary, middle, or high school). I would imagine the schools will take a liking to this right? (upward trend)

If you have IGETC and 60 units completed, I think you have a really good shot.

“This was the first time in my life i got straight A’s (never in elementary, middle, or high school). I would imagine the schools will take a liking to this right? (upward trend)”

They will most definitely appreciate that. One of UCB’s primary factors for consideration for admission is grade trends. Straight A’s will help you immensely. I also received straight A’s last semester for the first time in my life in 18 units of coursework. The UC’s will notice this, and they will take that into account when they decide whether or not to admit you. I believe for UCB, the factors for consideration go:

1) GPA
2) major prereqs/IGETC completion
3) grade trend

At least that’s what it says in my UCB pamphlet. Hope that helps!

Do they take into account the number of units you take? Last semester I took 21 Units, got 5/6 As (6th class was a B in calculus), semester before 3/4 A’s 1 B (history) and my first semester before that 3/4 A 1 C. (I also took 4 summer classes over). I always messed up in 1 class a semester but the overall units I took increased while the number of non A’s stayed the same. 13->17->21

cool, good to hear all the optimism! You guys answered all my questions and when i hear back from these schools, I’ll post what schools i got into and try to help others on this sight.
@ emilsinclair9, I saw your location and it made me laugh, whats your major? And lastly good luck to all of you waiting to hear back from schools soon, i hope everyone gets in where they hope to.

@ ilovecali: Hahahaha! Yeah, my location isn’t quite as exact as it should be :p. I actually live in the Bay Area, and Berkeley is where I want to end up. I long for the day that I can change that “location” to something more tangible…but April will come in due time.

My major is Psychology, but I applied to Cal Philosophy and UCSD Human Development. (UCLA/Davis - Psych). Wherever I attend I’ll be majoring in Psych. Whether that entails doubling, switching, or major/minoring, will depend on the university.

I hope to see you in the fall at UCB hopefully! If not, maybe even at UCLA or UCSD. Wish ya all the best :).

@ corinnejay: They do take that into account, and from what you mentioned above, that does seem like an upward trend with a relatively consistent pattern of grades. I would say that your record looks pretty solid from those 3 semesters.

i think you have a really good shot but it would also depend on your personal statement as well as your extra curriculars. good luck!

Am I doomed for the upward trend factor? I had straight A’s in my first semester… though I wasn’t (never) an academic all-star in HS.

@ilovecali, I thought there were only three prerequisites classes that UCLA wants. [ASSIST Report: SMCC 09-10 UCLA Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)
