Chances for UCLA and UCSD?

I know UCLA is a reach, but who knows, I hear UCLA admisisons are eratic. :D

here are my stats:
Freshman Year: 3.33, 3.166 GPA

Sophmore Year
1st Semester/2nd Semester
English AS: A/A
Chem 1-2: A/A
Algebra 3-4: B/B
Spanish 5-6: B/B
Elective History: A/A
Athletics: A/A
UC GPA for both semesters: 3.5 (considering the elective history and atheltics don’t count for UC GPA)

Junior Year
1st Semester/2nd Semester
Bio AP: B/A
Eng H: A/A
USHist AP: A/A
Journalism Adv: A/A
Physics: A/A
Pre-Calc: C/C
1st Semester: 4.0 UC GPA
2nd Semester: 4.167 UC GPA

Avg. UC GPA: Around 3.8-3.9

Pros: Upward trend
Cons: I suck at math / mediocre sophmore grades

SAT score first try was 1900; will retake in Oct. Likely 2000 or slighty above.
SAT II: Lit-710, US Hist: 590 then 630. Will probably retake US History

EC’s: Community Service at local library. 4 years tennis team. Various Clubs.

UCSD will be a match/slight reach and UCLA will be a reach

darn, i can't edit, but what i noticed is that elective history does count in the GPA so sophmore UC GPA is actually 3.6.

i forgot to add i am taking Ethnic Studies at a local community college (will probably get an A) for one more class credit. i believe that fits into my UC GPA as well.

also, thanks for the response goldenbear.

anymore input?

people cant really tell you if it i'll be a match or not b/c they aren't on the adcom. UC acceptances are very strange at every campus except for maybe Berkeley. UCLA is hard to get into but I have a friend who got in with a 3.5 or so and only one EC. If you write good essays, you'll be fine. And as far as UCSD, my other friend got in with only taking one AP in her junior year. She had a 3.5 UC GPA and a 1700 on the SATs. Don't worry!!!

thanks for the input alexc.

put some things into perspective.

Fall 2006
UCLA: GPA = 4.12, SAT = 2003
UCSD: GPA = 4.04, SAT = 1928

If you score 2000, you should get into UCSD for sure.
You also have a good shot at UCLA.

socal18, my GPA doesn't seem to match up all that favorably to the 4.12 and 4.04 UC GPA's at ucla/ucsd.

i estimate my UC GPA for sophmore and junior years to be about 3.86.

i'm just a little jittery with all the college talk is all. :)

You should apply for Cal also cause you might get into one and not the other. But I think UCSD is probably a good match and UCLA is probably a reach.

i will be applying to cal, ucla, ucsd, uci, ucd, ucsb.

what are my chances for these colleges?

According to my UC guide, here are you percentage chances at getting into the uc's you listed.

For The GPA Range of 3.7-3.99: UCB (7.4%), UCLA (12.8%), UCSD (34.4%), UCI (67.5%), UCD (67%), UCSB (71.3%)

For The SAT Range of 600-690: UCB (23.7%), UCLA (23.6%), UCSD (44.7%), UCI (68.8%), UCD (66%), UCSB (65%)

So since your gpa is closer to the 3.99 and your sat is closer to 690.....your chances should improve greatly.

UCB/UCLA - Reach
UCSD - Slight Reach/Maybe Match (depending on how you stack up to their comprehensive review thing)
UCI/UCD/UCSB - Match

i'll post my october SAT score when they are released, but considering i get around a 2000-2100, how much will that improve my chances?

Again according to my guide....

For the SAT range of 700-800

UCB - 47.3%
UCLA - 54.3%
UCSD - 71.4%
UCI - 85.5%
UCD - 85.8%
UCSB - 84.6%

Oh by the way are you ELC bc the ELC acceptance rate seems really high for all of the schools........(that might be bc if you are elc you probably have really high stats), but I still think it helps.

thanks.

as for the ELC, i have no idea.

isn't it like the top 4% with over a 3.0 UCGPA in an ELC eligible school?

i checked up a bit on it and it said i wouldn't know until the fall semester of your senior year.

i'm confused about this. insight would be greatly appreciated.

the UC system will send you a letter notifying you that you are in the top 4% of your high school class sometime in September or October. It really helps to recieve this designation. Ask your HS counselor if you are in the top 4%.

You should have received the ELC notification at the end of your Junior year if you were in the top 12% or something; that one only signifies that you have a good chance of being an ELC candidate, though, and does not qualify you as ELC officially.

you get the official one in sept./oct.

I believe your UC GPA is 3.96.
Raise your SAT I to about 2050. Raise your SAT II's too. If it were me, I would spend my time on SAT II's because you only need to prepare for 2 of them, whereas SAT I requires 3 different areas of preparation.
If you do the above, you should have a fair to good shot for UCSD.

As for UCLA, write wonderful essays. I don't mean some boring essay that you turn in for lit, I mean truly powerful essays that reveal yourself. I'm sure you've heard of applicants with below average stats getting in, well, you heard right. Focus on your EC's, obstacles, and personality.

Good luck

wait, how is my UCGPA 3.96?

also, thanks for all the advice.

i'm going to retake SATI and US History.

I just estimated your UC GPA. You have 5 B's and 2 C's. To offset the C's, just convert 2 A's to 2 B's and those 2 C's to 2 B's. So, basically, you have 9 B's for soph + jr year.
I had 8 B's for soph and jr year. My UC GPA was 4.0, so I used that to estimate your UC GPA. Since you have one more B than I did, it should be only slightly below 4.0.
