Chances for UCLA Anthropology?

After shuffling through several major options and repeatedly changing my mind, I've finally decided on anthropology. Although I know my chances are slim, hey, what the hell.

Current breakdown of grades:

English101 Honors: C
Astro110 Honors: B
Philosophy: B
Calculus: C (personal reasons why I took calculus, I know it wasn't required, ruined the performance of an entire semester, and was a mistake on my part, which I wholeheartedly accept. Going to mention it in my personal statement)
History117: B
English102 Honors: B
Anthropology102 Honors: A
Political Science101: B
And a language class: A

I am/was in TAP, which explains the honors courses, I'll be seeing the counselor to find out if I am dismissed or not for my first semester's horrible outcome. (If dismissed, is it possible to reapply and be readmitted if your gpa is above a 3.0 again?)

Hopefully by the end of Fall I'll have one of these three GPA's:

Pessimistic prediction: 3.3
Optimistic prediction: 3.4
Pulling off a near 4.0: 3.5

I'm also volunteering at several places, and will be starting my volunteering at UCLA's Fowler Museum of Anthropology, so I'm hoping that helps me out.

As for the essay I'll be aiming to make it as near perfect as I humanly can. Going to ask professors to proofread it and such. If there's anything else which would help me, I'd love to hear it. I want to do as much as I can to make myself shine and make up for my past mistakes. Hopefully UCLA will appreciate that haha. Any and all responses are greatly appreciated, as always.

You actually have a shot. For some odd reason UCLA accepts anthro majors with gpa’s that are like ridiculously low.

Yeah. Just get your pre-reqs done.

You should have seen some of the GPA’s of the anthro majors that were accepted this year. Quite a bit in the low 3’s.

anyone know if Berkeley anthro majors are like this as well?

i think you have a good shot at ucla. Anthro is actually an “easy” major to get into… everyone from my honors class applied as sociology majors and applied as anthro for an alternative major. About everyone got into anthro instead of sociology lol… I say all you need is about 3.2-3.5 to get in.

I knew a girl that got into Berkeley with a 3.0 GPA.

^ That person is what we would call an “exception.”

Thanks for the responses! I always do hear that Anthropology is one of the “easy” majors to get into, but I didn’t realize that I would have a solid chance of actually getting in. Quite the motivation hahaha. There’s only three pre-reqs required for the major: cultural anthro, physical (bio) anthro, and archaeology. I finished off honors cultural anthro with an A and will have physical anthro finished by the end of Summer. However I’m forced to take archaeology in the Spring due to time conflicts in the Fall and the fact that a lot of classes have been cut. Would this affect me in any way?

No; as long as you get it done by the end of Spring '10, you’re golden.

I remember seeing someone here who had 2.7 and got in

I have a 4.0 and want to major in anthro, perhaps I should find a “smarter” major?

Major in Biology, Chemistry or Engineering. I’m minoring in Chemistry with Anthropology.

Yes, but I fear I can not complete the pre reqs for Cal and UCLA with a major like that.

Why would you need to find a “smarter” major?

Just major in what you enjoy learning.

The key to majoring in science and do well is your math and analytical skills. For me, I struggled my first two years in Science because I started math from Pre-Algebra to Calculus 3. Crazy huh?

That’s insane. Did you transfer from a community college? Slash, where did you transfer to?
