Third and final semester at CC, IGETC certified. Will have done TAG for UCSD and have 69 units by the end of this current (fall) semester as well. GPA-4.0 Major-Political science
TAG signed with UCSD for spring and UCI for winter (already received acceptance). No ecs besides work, some sports in high school and modest community service in high school. So what are my odds of getting into UCLA for poli sci?

So far so good. Do you have all the pre-reqs your school offers done for poli sci at UCLA?

If you do, and if you write an outstanding personal statement you should feel very comfortable during the long five month wait for decisions.

I will by the end of this semester. I keep hearing about people with 4.0s from cc being turned down from ucla for poli sci/other majors, and I'm hearing it enough to make me second guess waiting to apply. Is there truth to that?

Usually those people get rejected for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with competitiveness. UCLA and UCB are remarkably strict when it comes to getting three things done before you transfer: 1) finish the dang pre-reqs; 2) finish the dang IGETC; and 3) finish 60 units. You would be surprised as to how many people get rejected from top programs for not meeting those three criteria. Anyway, if you can finish all of that, have a solid GPA, some work/ECs, and have a solid personal statement, then you shouldn't be as apprehensive as you're seeming right now.

@ grey: Thanks that does ease my mind somewhat. The main thing I'm worried about is my lack of EC, I have some community service from HS and while I was in CC I worked at Red Lobster for a few months. I did the CC route in 3 semesters so I really didn't have time for a job. Do they even care about that that much for CC transfers?

I hear that they typically do want to see you doing something with your spare time. I'm not sure exactly how much they weigh this though. Anyone have a response to this?

I didn't have much spare time in CC since I took so many units to finish in a year and a half. Do you think the admissions staff will go easier on me because of that? I did more work/ community service in high school when I did have time however.

What do your semester unit loads look like?

9 for fall when I was working, 24 for spring (6 over intercession 18 over spring itself), 11 over summer and 14 this fall. This doesn't add up to 60 I know, I have 11 units from AP tests.

I think that your course load is consistent with someone who isn't working. I can't really say if they will cut you some slack based solely on that, but yeah those are some pretty heavy terms.

grey_syntactics hit the nail on the head.

1) Major Prereqs
2) IGETC
3) minimum units

You should feel confident with your application, but make sure you nail your personal statements too.

see, this doesnt make sense. alot of people who got into UCLA last year claimed that they did not finish all of their prereqs before spring semester.

for me, at least, my cc district did not offer two political science courses until the spring (and i just registered for those). will i be at a disadvantage, despite having a pretty solid GPA, ECs, and being TAP certified for UCLA?

the same is with IGETC. i wont be finishing IGETC till the end of spring since i am trying to transfer in a year. i am currently taking 20.5 units and next semester, 19 (ill have 60 by the end).
