Chances for UCLA

Indian male from California

GPA-4.0 unweighted, 4.6 weighted, uncapped UC (not going to give capped since it doesn't matter for application evaluation). I am ELC.

SAT-2240 (780 CR, 770 W, 690 M)

SAT IIs- Math II:770, Chem:790, US:800

Sophomore-Took the only two weighted classes available to me (1 AP (Euro), 1 honors (Chem)) that would work with my schedule. This may work to hurt me, since other peoples' schedules allowed them to take a few more.

Junior-All core subjects were weighted (3 AP (Chem, Lang, US), 2 honors (physics, precalc), 2 extra classes (band, robotics))

5s on all the APs taken up to this point and As on everything.

Senior- 5 APs (AP Bio, Calc AB, Music Theory, Comp Gov) English 12 and band.

Community College: Cultural Anthropology over summer (A), English (to make up for an AP I had to drop senior year), grade in progress

As for my ECs:
Oboe and English Horn-First chair in school all 4 years
-In top regional youth orchestra and am co-principal for 3 years
- Made county honor band twice, once with second chair
-Lessons since 7th grade

Robotics-Part of FIRST Robotics team at school for 3 years. Part of senior leadership, which basically means I'm co-president with 4 others. Team has placed in several regional and national contests.

NASA-Part of the NASA Online Community, a selective program that allows high schoolers to interact with NASA professionals online and view exclusive online lectures. (2 years)

Other clubs-Founded club to discuss and debate politics and highlight how political dissent is beneficial. This was a conventional school club for 1 year and for the next 2, it has been more private, with in person meetings every once in a while, but MAJOR online involvement. I am co-president and co-web master.
-CSF (kind of a joke)

Varsity Track and Field-Pole Vaulting for 2 years (junior, senior)

Community service:-150 hours volunteering at Bay Area Hospice Foundation thrift store to provide affordable merchandise to the disadvantaged, with proceeds going toward better hospice facilities for the community. (This is over junior and senior year)
~400 hours peer tutoring at school
-Spent summers of 9 and 10 in India (family issues). I was able to do about 60 hours total of showcasing Western classical instruments for the community at a small school.
-Played in BAYOF Hope music festival to raise money for homeless children in the Bay Area (kind of the equivalent a nonathletic charity marathon)

Awards/Honors: -AP Scholar with Honor
-National Merit Commended Scholar
-Academic Letter (major school award)
-Second chair of County Honor Band was an awarded position, with a ceritificate and medal.
-National Band Director's Association Award
-Certificate of Commendation by CMEA Board of Directors (music thing)
-Most dedicated Award for Symphonic Band at school for 2 years
-Third place at 2008 VEX games for Robotics
-Part of 2nd place team at Silicon Valley Regional FIRST Robotics competitoin
-Certificate of recognition from National Holocaust Association for a writing contest (kind of BS)

Job Experience- Paid internship with small (very new) chemical manufacturing company this summer.

I also have personal hardships (really personal) which I am going to discuss in one of my essays.

Thanks

You’re in.

i don’t understand why people with 4.0 u/w even bother making a chance thread

I’m sure plenty of people with 4.0 will get rejected. In any case, any more opinions?

In for sure bro

Anyone else? I’m getting similar responses for Cal with a half notch less enthusiasm; anyone with a more skeptical view?

Are you in the top 4% of your class?

You are 99.99% in ! …lol
oh and did u also get the ncs scholar athlete award? since u did track and got a 4.0+

Yes, I got ELC, so I’m in the top 4%.

And ^ I don’t know about that award, maybe my school doesn’t participate?

you have a good chance, wow my fellow indian founder of a club cool! good luck:)

You are in sir. Public universities look at grades first; 4.0/4.6 is more than enough to get into into UCLA. With those kind of stats, you should apply for Ivies. You’ll definitely get into Cal too; they’re big on GPA/SAT.

Dude, you’re like 5 times better than I am and I’m in UCLA.

You should be asking the chances of Caltech or MIT or the Ivy Leagues taking you in, not UCLA!

No, don’t do chances everywhere! They’re meaningless.

(except you’re almost certainly in at any UC, unless your essays are offensive or something)

if i were u, i would skip the UC’s
and apply to CalTech seriously
either ur a perfect student or fake stats…
but good luck either way im sure ur into every UC u applied to.

What are the chances of all this enthusiasm jinxing me in the end haha…

Anyway, is there a good chance I’ll be contacted for regents or anything?

Are you joking? Firstly you’re like some kind of a genius, so you deserve to be in! If you don’t get in, they are not worth your time. Where else are you applying besides UC’s? You should aim very high. I’m jealous of your stats, mine are a joke compared to yours! Good luck, i hope you get in.

not to be rude but i think some of the people here are giving you wrong advice…first of all, i wouldn’t start thinking you’re a genius just yet (check out the apps of most people applying to the ivies and you’ll see why). secondly, you certainly should get into ucla, but your app is mediocre at best for the ivies (below average sat i, decent ec’s but nothing unique and nothing that screams “passion” imo, nothing too impressive on the awards list, etc). maybe you should apply to some if you actually want to go there, but your chances at getting in to one of them are pretty slim. especially hyp. you might have a more decent shot at the others, though not a great shot. however, i did just read that you had personal hardships that you wrote about in your essay…if these hardships were great enough and you can convey how you worked to overcome great odds, THEN you might have a shot, possibly even at the top ivies. that could be the key factor for you. either way, you really should get into ucla though, since your gpa and sat scores are obviously above average for it. good luck!

^I agree; that’s why applied to only one Ivy at which I know I won’t get in anyway. But your opinion of my app could just as easily apply to UCLA given the trend towards stranger and stranger denials every year. In fact, I think even you’re overestimating my chances. (Although, I would argue there is one Ivy I have a better shot at than Cal or UCLA: Cornell. But I didn’t apply there, so that point is moot).

Having said that, a girl from my school got regents at Cal and UCLA with slightly lower stats than me, so that’s why I have even a little optimism.

Also, just for an extra gauge of chances, here is where else I applied:

Princeton (not getting in)
Stanford (not getting in)
Rice
Johns Hopkins
University of Chicago
NYU
USC
Cal
UCSD
UCD (got in)
UCSB (got in)
University of Michigan Ann Arbor (got in)

hmm i dont think we’re overestimating your chances for ucla though. i mean, a good gpa and a sat 2100+ should be able to get into ucla IMO and i think most people pretty much agree…

why do you think you have a better shot at cornell than cal and ucla though? :/

princeton and stanford could depend on your personal hardship, don’t forget. i don’t know enough about rice, jh, or u of c to gauge your chances there…i think you’re in at nyu unless you applied to tisch or stern (well you have a good shot at stern probably but tisch obviously can’t be “chanced”). if you applied to cas though you should definitely be in at nyu. usc i think your chances are good if you applied to clas or marshall or annenburg. if you applied to sca or thornton, then all bets are off. you should easily be in at ucsd, obviously.
