Chances for UCs/CSUs?

I'm a white female from a suburban/ rural community in California.

SAT:
First time taking it-- 710 CR, 620 M, 770 W, for a total 0f 2100.
Taking it again this weekend, planning on bringing all three scores up.

SAT II:
Biology 750
Literature 660

ACT: Scores are coming out soon, I'm feeling confident since I found it much easier than my SAT.

Now, GPA is where things slip a little.
My 10-11 UW GPA is 3.35 (Although I'm making up a class, which will bring it to a 3.46.)
My 10-11 W GPA is 3.61 (With the made up class, it becomes a 3.72 on my transcript.)

UC GPA: 3.54 (with fixed class, it becomes a 3.71)

APs and scores:
World History (10th grade): 5
English Language (11th): 5
Psychology (11th): 4
Biology (11th): 4
Statistics(12th): Test at the end of the year, feeling fine about it so far.
English Language (12th): Same as above
Art History (12th): Same.

AP Scholar

My forte is in writing and English, so I feel very confident about my UC personal statements and any other essays I should have to write.

ECs:

-Varsity soccer Junior/Senior years, captain my senior year, won our league both years. JV freshman year, transferred high schools after my sophmore year so I didn't play then.
-Played soccer year-round all four years of high school, often upwards of ten hours a week

-Volunteer at local library for two hours a week, been doing it about ten weeks.
-Paid referee for the local soccer club, about 3 hours each weekend for 5 weeks. Past two years.
-Coached soccer camps over the summer, two weeks at 12.5 hours each for the past 3 years
-Peer tutor (for free) for several students my junior and senior years. About 3-4 hours each week, 25 weeks in total.

So I suppose a little over 200 hours of service over my high school career (if that stuff counts, I'm not sure about the paid refereeing.)

Only school involvement is varsity sports and National Honor Society.

3 years of Spanish, 4 years of math, 2 years of visual arts, 4 years of English, and 4 (possibly 5, not sure) years of social studies.

What are my chances for UC Santa Barbara? Cal Poly SLO? SDSU? My safeties are Sonoma State and University of Arizona.
Any other recommendations? Ideas? Comments? Hahaha thank you in advance :)

UCSB = Match
Cal Poly = Match
SDSU = Low Match

Your courseload seems rigorous enough and your EC’s seem focused and passionate. You have good community service and your SAT Score is very strong for UCSB, SLO and SDSU. GPA is just fine as well! Good luck!

FEEL FREE TO CHANCE ME BACK! :smiley:

Your GPA is a little low for UCSB but your SAT scores are well above the average for accepted students at UCSB so I would say your chances there are good. CSUs do not use the writing score so for CSU purposes your SAT score is 1330/1600 which is a little above the average for CAL Poly SLO and considerably above the average for SDSU. Your GPA is a little low for Cal Poly SLO but I still think you have a shot there based on your SAT scores. I would say that you are in at SDSU except for the fact I do not know where you live. CSUs give priority to applicants from their service area. If you live in the SDSU service area you are in for sure, if not your chances are not as good.

Thanks to both of you :)

The only thing that worries me is the class I’m making up. It was my second semester of junior English, I received a D. I’m making it up online, so I’ll have to put “in progress” on my applications. How will this affect my chances? Will they look past that?

UCs and CSUs require four years of English in high school to be eligible for admission. You should contact the schools you are applying to and make sure that the online course will meet their requirements.

I was worried about the same thing, but I checked and it is accepted. The rest of my grades are decent, it was just a fluke bad grade… :(

Thanks!

Bummmmp

SLO might depend on your major.

<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions;

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/campuses/files/santabarbara.pdf

I’m thinking either a sociology or psychology degree, possibly with a minor in polysci.

I know I want to apply in the liberal arts college, because I heard that while it’s almost impossible to change colleges within cal poly (ie an English major to an engineering major) you can change within your college, like an English major to a history major.

Bummmmmp, anyone else?
