What are his GPAs recalculated using the method here: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/ ?

Based on the weighted-capped GPA, you can look at the past admission rates to UCs at http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-general/2127392-faq-uc-historical-frosh-admit-rates-by-hs-gpa-2018.html . However, computer science is generally a more competitive major, so admission rates / chances should be expected to be lower for the same GPA range.

For SJSU and CSUs other than CPSLO, calculate the eligibility index as GPA * 800 + SATRW + SATM. GPA is the weighted-capped GPA from the above calculation. However, it looks like the student’s 33 ACT is much higher than the 1200 SAT; based on https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/eligibility-index/Documents/eligibility-index.pdf , it looks like CSU considers 33 ACT to be like 1510 SAT. SJSU’s past thresholds for admission are listed at http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/ .

On the face of it without putting actual numbers in or analysis, the schools mentioned are very competitive for computer engineering/science. The GPA is low for that major. SJSU might be an exception but the school in recent years has gotten more competitive because of the close proximity to Silicon Valley. You might look at other CSU’s, UCR or UCM.

SJSU’s threshold for CS for fall 2019 admissions was 4675; for computer engineering, it was 4300 (but with a modified version with a 3:1 weighting of math:RW scores). Assuming 1510 SAT equivalent from 33 ACT, the weighted capped GPA would have needed to have been 3.96 or 3.49 for those two majors respectively.

Thresholds could change next year.
