II am a high school junior and want to know what I can feasibly get into. My general overview is that I have good but not incredible stats and good extracurriculars
Objective:
SAT: 1520
GPA: 3.8 Unweighted, 3.9 Weighted (School doesn’t weight underclassmen grades)
School Type: Very competitive Public
Rank: N/A
Intended major(s): Want to go Pre-Med, so biology related
Location: California
Ethnicity/Race: Indian
Income Bracket: High
Coursework:
All honors classes
APs: Chem, Bio so far, AB Calc, Environmental Science, and Stats next year (School doesn’t allow non-language APs as underclassmen) (Haven’t taken AP exams of SAT II tests)
Awards/important recomendations:
Stanford STaRS Reconstructive Surgery Internship (2% Acceptance Rate) - Have a letter of rec from a well-known Stanford professor
Top 20 in the State of CA in the Geo Bee (Was in 8th grade, but it’s a pretty big accomplishment)
Extracurriculars:
Eagle Scout
Varsity Tennis (11th, pretty much guaranteed 12th), played JV 9th and 10th
Editor-in-Chief of one of the nation’s best HS newspapers
Editor-in-Chief of my school’s comedy newspaper (like the Onion but at a school level, has over 1000 likes on FB)
Varsity Tennis (11th, 12th), played JV 9th and 10th
Interned at a Biotech Startup between 9th and 10th
Here’s my major concern. I got a B+ in AP Bio first semester. However, I got into an extremely prestigious Biology internship at Stanford before I took AP Bio (Got in as an incoming junior, everyone else I was with there was a rising senior. Does this mean that I should not apply for pre med or any biology majors, or should I apply anyhow? I am a strong Chem student, so I was considering applying for Chem as well. Additionally, I haven’t taken any AP Exams yet, so how big would getting a 5 on Ap Bio be for me?
Thoughts?
Thanks so much
One more EC: President of Input Club,
And 1 more AP: Macroeconomics
good SAT and good UW GPA but W is a bit low. you want at least a 4.2 to be competitive for top UCs and Ivies. which UCs specifically are you interested in?
the B+ in AP Bio should not prevent you from applying to a bio major. a B is not a bad grade, especially since it is an AP class. the internship would show that you’re capable of producing high-quality work, especially in a research environment rather than just getting a good grade in school. it will also look very good if you get an A second semester, as that shows improvement. are you on track to do so? a 4/5 on the AP exam would also be good. good luck! the B+ won’t be a deal breaker.
also, i don’t see AP Physics on your planned/completed courses. if your school offers it, i would definitely recommend taking at least AP Physics 1. it doesn’t look good if you don’t have a physics class on your transcript and your school offers it.
@wormholes I will be taking AP Physics next year (My school calls it Physics Honors but it is the same course). Thanks!
@Gumbymom My UC GPA is 4.0, thanks for the calculator!
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:
UCB: 12%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 39%
UCSB: 49%
UCD: 52%
UCI: 57%
UCSC: 83%
UCR: 90%
UCM: 92%
You have great test scores, so your excellent EC’s and some equally excellent essays could definitely help your chances at the top UC’s: UCLA/UCB.
Good Luck.
@Gumbymom Thank you so much!
Your SAT is within mid 50 of UMich while your uwGPA is below admission average. Considering the OOS admission rate near 20%, UMich should be a low reach for you. Nevertheless, can you afford the full price.
@billcsho I can afford it. UMIch also takes a lot of people from my school each year (last year 38 got in and 18 went), so I don’t know if that potentially helps my chances.
you’re a strong applicant, like above comments, your GPAs are somewhat below average/average, but your test scores and ecs look great! you have good chances for all the ucs, and the rest are high-low reaches without essays/teacher recs.

How does your stat compared with former students admitted by UMich?
