Chances for UCSB and UCD

Just finished junior year with updated stats. Please chance me for UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis. Thanks!

Weighted Cumulative GPA: 3.73
Unweighted Cumulative GPA: 3.28
UC GPA: 3.37
SAT Score: 2140 (700M, 740CR, 700W)
Class Rank: Top 12% (75/640)

of APs: 11

Volunteer hours: 160
Sports: Two years varsity CC and one year varsity wrestling
Clubs: Founded/co-chaired two clubs
Major: Not sure yet (undeclared/finance/econ)

That’s kind of a tough one. Your SAT is strong, but your GPA is a bit low for UCs. Davis and SB have been really competitive these past few years and the average GPA is over 4.0. I would say honestly your chances are not ideal, but it could still happen if you write an amazing essay. I suggest looking at some other schools outside the UC system. Good luck!

With 11 APs one would expect a larger difference between unweighted and UC gpas. Are you counting future APs or have you had 11 already?

Thanks for the responses. Only 6 APs so far; I’m enrolled in five more next year. Those aren’t counted in the GPA, of course. And… the UC GPA calculation only allows for four classes to be weighted.

are you looking for schools in california?

Yes. I am looking at several others. I’d like to go to a state school to keep costs down, but go to the best school possible at the same time. Basically, have my cake and eat it too! Any suggestions? I’ve looked at a few private schools too, but am not going to be eligible for much need based aid and don’t think my stats are going to generate much merit aid.

UCD/UCSB would be Low Reaches based on GPA even though SAT score is competitive. Is there a reason for the lower GPA which could be addressed in an essay or additional comments section of the UC application? I think your need to look at UCR and UCSC if you want to attend a UC. Some of the Cal States would be Matches such as SDSU/CSUF/CSULB/SJSU which all have good Finance programs. There is no reason not to apply to UCD and UCSB, but make sure you have some solid Matches and Safeties on your list. Good luck.

I think gumbymom’s suggestions are good. I think SDSU and the CSUs would be good match schools, and you could also look at SF State, Chapman University, and maybe LMU
