Sats: 1450/1600 2140/2400 first time taking again June

Go to one of the top ten private high schools in the country, but grades are not great. School does not calculate gpa or class rank though, offers very few APs. I have mostly Bs with a couple of As. Basically the top 40 percent of the class goes to ivy league or equivalent.

Based on this info, what chance do I have at Umich (OOS), U Wisc. Madison (OOS), Bucknell, and Colgate? Also, I know it would be a stretch but would I have any chance at a school like Berkeley? Thanks!

oh and Im a white male. captain of the track team, etc.

Oh and my sat breakdown was 710 math 740 reading. I also have other very unique E.C.s and my recs should be solid. I havent taken any SAT IIs yet (plan on taking Lit, Math 1, and Physics)

Are you talking about Berkeley? If not, then no… Michigan is pretty nice towards OOS residents. It’ll be very difficult to get into Berkeley if you don’t have some good EC’s or essay- Berkeley weighs the essay pretty highly and the SAT is a bit secondary… You have a good shot at Michigan if you come from a demanding private high school, which would explain your B’s. You’ll probably end up getting into Wisconsin.

By the way, for Berkeley, you’ll have to take SAT Math Lvl 2 if you want to take a Math exam.

Yeah, Im not as strong in math so I wouldnt want to take math 2, and Im not applying for engineering or anything. Im pretty sure I could handle the math 1 though.

ANYBODY ELSE? How about smaller liberal arts schools (LEHIGH, COLGATE, BUCKNELL, AND BATES)? THANKS I APPRECIATE IT

JJJJ:
I’ll give this a whirl, but mind you, I’m kind of jaded to UMich for the following reason:
You are probably more qualified than 90% of the people who apply, given the type of school you describe yourself coming from…but I dont get the feeling that Umich particularly cares about that (or SAT/ACT scores for that matter)

That being said, Michigan will look at your UW GPA…period…they will calculate it (if it hasn’t already been done) and your B’s will keep you from being an automatic acceptance…Probably a deferral upfront, to eventually a waitlist…

Everywhere else, you are probably fine…In terms of more competitive schools, it would depend on how they look at your high school and how students have fared there in terms of admissions…hope this helps…

I think people on CC seriously overestimate UM’s selectivity. Several kids from my large, public, not overly prestigious high school have been accepted with a class rank in the mid 150s out of 700, with a low-mid 3.0 range GPA. I know other kids who have been only deferred (not flat out rejected) with a low 3 GPA and a 27 ACT. Apply and see what happens.

summerinthecity: Not sure where you live, or what high school you go to, but you might want to check this out…It is the rare group of students admitted to UMich, especially OOS where this OP is from that are admitted with below a 3.5Umich GPA…Your school must be either a UMich target school or something else of an anomoly according to their CDS…

It would be very hard for me to accurately estimate my class rank. I will say that my school is extremely competitive, and I am positive that I am neither at the very top nor the bottom. My Sat score out of 1600 puts me in the top half though (colleges dont look at writing, right?).

Also, what are my chances if i apply to Vanderbilt or Duke Early Decision? I will most likely get my sat scores up significantly when I take them a second time in June (scored higher on practice test 800 math)…how selective are these twoo schools when applying ED. CHANCE ME!!!

As i mentioned in the first post, I go to an unusual, selective school in which very few classes are given the AP moniker. Most classes however are quite rigorous and prepare for the Ap exams Ex: I am taking AP lit, but no english classes are labeled Ap (The majority of students at my school receive a 5). To answer your question, I will take Ap Biology, Ap Calc, etc.

The only problem is that I slacked freshman/sophmore year and basically got straight bs (more As are mixed in this year however).

So, as I mentioned in above post, what are my chances if I apply ED to Vandy or Duke??? (Not sure how selective schools are in early Decision)
