chances for undergrad business schools

I’m a junior in high school right now and I’m ondering what my chances are at some top b-schools across the country.

unweighted GPA: 3.83
ACT score:28
Asian-Indian Student in Michigan

EC’s
-Tennis team - 3 years
-Mock Trial Team
-Indian American Students Association
-Liberal Students Association
-Youth Advisory Council (youth community service group) - Treasurer for next year
-In the process of starting the first business related club, I will be/am the president.

I’m hoping to get an internship with a local bank or an investment bank this summer.

Please tell me my chances at the following schools:

University of Michigan- Ann Arbor (Ross)- direct admit, or regular???

NYU (Stern)

University of Texas- Austin (McCombs)

Carnahie Mellon University (Tepper)

UNC-Chappel Hill (Kenan-Flagler)

Indiana University–Bloomington (Kelley)

Univ. of Southern California (Marshall) - do you need SAT 2’s???

University of Chicago - Econ program

Thanks.

You've GOTTA raise that ACT. With the ACT currently it goes

Direct admit to Ross: No. Regular: 50/50 depending on your school's admit data. Look it up yourself or ask your guidance counselor about what it usually takes for your school to get into LSA Michigan.

No to small chance with that ACT.

Probably no because of your out of state status and ACT score. McCombs is 5% or something out of state since Texas has the 10% rule and a LOT of these kids go to business. Some 10% kids cannot get into McCombs. This also depends on other factors such as how many 10% kids try for McCombs and how much out of state competition you have. There is a limit for both.

0% since Carnahie doesn't exist. Anyways, the ACT score will hurt you again but Carnegie Mellon is holistic in admissions. An ED and a good essay may get you in but I would say you aren't in for RD (Tepper has gotten 50% and then 30% increase in apps in past two years).

I thought you had to transfer into UNC business? Probably a match for regular.

Yes.

Probably yes.

Probably no but it depends on your essays. UChicago and CMU are both holistic in admissions.

I think your GPA is fine for Michigan. They worry more about GPA than test scores, if you are above a 3.7 UM GPA, in-state, it's a solid match for you. It would be nice to raise that ACT to a 30. Indiana is a safety, if you could get your ACT up to a 30, you could be eligible for Honors and a full ride there.

Just a tip to posters here and on other threads--if you want better feedback make sure to not only give us unweighted GPA--but also the number of honors courses you've taken (and will take) and/or a weighted GPA. This enables the students already in school and/or parents to give better estimates of your chances at different schools.

just thought i'd add that i will be finishing off and mailing all of my college apps before september 30, and also that i would like to go into either investment banking or trading after college.

AcceptedAlready- How would raising my act score to a 30 affect my chances at Uchicago? O ya, and i checked about umich, and was told that a 3.8 and 28 from my high school will be just fine for just a regular admit... thanks for the input.

Calcruzer- my weighted gpa is a 3.877. The honors classes i took are Honors Philosophy, and Honors International Relations. AP's- AP Calc(will take senior yr), AP Government...Also, my school does not offer AP econ, but i am studying on my own to take both the macroeconomics and microeconomics AP tests.

A2Wolves6-Do u (or anyone) know anything about how recruiting opportunities are for Indiana? specifically for i-banking or trading?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Anyone and everyone, please feel free to reply to these questions or just provide any input of your own.

Indiana has a few i-banking clubs, they have about 70 students going into i-banking this year, there are definitely i-banking oppurtunities there. Companies recruit there hard, students get all sorts of great internships, everyone who's not in business there is jealous of the B-School student jobs. They were given an A for recruiting by Business Week, have great job placement, and salaries a few thousand above the mean salary nationally.

You'll have a tough time getting into NYU and UT with that ACT score. IMO getting into UT OOS AND mccombs, esp BHP, is tougher than getting into NYU.

THe same goes with UNC- it is extremely tough to get in OOS without a higher ACT. I think you have a fair chance at Indiana, but I don't know much about the school haha.

for USC, you need 3 SATIIs I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Just raise your ACTs and/or SATs as high as you can. Aim for a 36 so if you fail you'll land among the high 30's.

You may be a bit disappointed if you apply with an ACT of 28 as it is (especially with rising applications next year).

Right now I would rate your chances as follows:

Michigan--direct admit to Ross (about 30%), admission to college (85%)

NYU (Stern)--only 20% (need higher ACT/SAT and more honors courses--and excellent APs--4s and 5s)--no admit to regular school and then transfer to Stern allowed--so I won't give stats on regular school admission

Texas (McCombs) -- about 50%--a weighted GPA over 3.95 or ACT of 30 or more would increase your chances tremendously--up to about 70%. Odds of Admission to regular school right now--around 60%

Carnegie Mellon--about 70% if you apply ED, otherwise 40% RD (I agree totally with AcceptedAlready on this one)

North Carolina-no direct to business school--to regular school about 40% (GPA is too low)

Indiana--direct admit to business school about 90%, to regular school 95%

7.Univ of Chicago--Econ program direct admit (10%), admit to school 40%

As always, this presumes you have a good essay and continue to pursue your ECs as shown.

Actually, his direct admission to the B-School at IU is 0%. You must have a 29 ACT to get direct admission. No biggie though, because you are automatically admitted if you have a 3.0 after your freshman year. Also, you have to keep a 3.0 to keep your scholarship (OP will likely get 6K per year), so he'll get in anyways. You can always re-take the ACT/SAT though and get a qualifying score.

Direct admit qualifications are here: http://www.kelley.iu.edu/ugrad/admission/requirements.cfm

Direct Freshman Admission

Get your Kelley career rolling the minute you step on campus by taking part in our direct admit program for exceptional students. If you meet the following criteria, you will automatically be offered direct admission to Kelley before entering IU:

* Already admitted to IU Bloomington and indicated business as your intended major
* SAT composite score of 1270 or ACT composite score of 29
* Top 10 percent of high school class or 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale

[/quote]

a2wolves6,

I thought you either have to have the SAT/ACT score or you have to have a 3.5+ GPA unweighted, not both. I said 90% direct based on the GPA alone. If this is not the case, then I agree with you. Otherwise, I stick with my original estimate.

(Also, I expect this to go up to 3.6 GPA, SAT 1300, ACT 30-31 based upon the competitiveness going up next year)

P.S. I thought someone on here said they got in based upon the ACT score alone, even though their GPA was just so-so. So I presumed it was also possible to get in based upon the GPA alone, with a less than stellar test score. The Indiana website quote you give is not so clear about this. Do you know what it takes for sure? (that is, (1) both GPA and test score, (2) just GPA alone or test score alone, or (3) just test score--GPA unimportant)

That's true, someone on this board said they got in with a 3.3 UW, but i'm almost certain that it's the weighted GPA that they take into account (the one that appears on the transcript). If your school doesn't show the weighted grades, then I don't think it will matter.

You have to have both GPA and test scores. People had the GPA, but not the test scores (like 3.6 and 28 ACT), and didn't get in. I know a few people on this board that said they didn't get in because of ACT.

I would say that your chances at UNC from out of state are slim to none. People have been too generous in that evaluation becuase UNC's avg. out of state gpa is 3.95 and ACT of 32-33.

A2wolves6,
thanks for the clarification--which also explains why my son didn't get direct admit upon appeal. His weighted GPA is right at 3.5, but his high school doesn't show that on the transcript--so with the lower unweighted GPA on the transcript (he took 12 IB honor courses), he had no chance.
