Chances for University of Maryland?

Hello All,
I am currently a senior at a private school in L.A. I am applying to the University of Maryland College Park and I need some serious opinions. My High School GPA is not the best. I had some rough times in 10th grade earning sub-par grades. I rebounded in 11th earning above a 3.8(at my school a 3.8 is very high). My high school gpa is around a 3.2. I have won an international science competition and also NASA's High School competition (came in second nation-wide). I am the founder of a political club at my school that is very active on campus. I also received a community service award from the city for doing more then 180hours. I have tons and tons of accomplishments out of school for my scientific achievements but because of my low GPA I am feeling quite nervous. Also, on my first ACT I received a 30 but I am retaking it. I wanted to know what people thought of my chances of getting accepted?

Thanks everyone!

Any thoughts? Bump!

Well, Maryland does place more attention on grades/SATs. Your best bet is to explain why they’re lower on the application. Get your SAT’s and/or ACTs up and you’ll be good.

If you have strong essays and do that, there’s a decent chance you’ll get in.

I wanted to also know if anyone had input on these colleges as well:
Boston University
Ohio State at Columbus
University of Washington
University of Wisconsin Madison

Emm, your GPA may pose a problem at U Wisconsin and Boston U. I think, with good essays and an acceptable explanation for the poor grades, not to mention a 32 ACT, you have a realistic shot at maryland.

Any other thoughts?

Thoughts!?

A couple of questions before any decision can be given.

LA: As in Lousiana or California…makes a big difference
GPA: uw or w?
ACT: what are the component parts for E and M, for example, a 26 for E and English being a second language could be negotiated away in the schools mind, especially since that would leave you with a 34 for M and it looks like you want science, not LA(liberal arts)
APs: Do you have any?

Your awards will bump you up for admission purposes, but that gpa is just going to kill you.

Somethings to realize.

 1. LY they had over 29K applicants, higher is expected this yr because of the economy
 2. UMD is decreasing OOS from 30% to 25%.
 3. UMD is quadrupling its International admissions by class of 18, taking them from 150 to 600 students. That means less will be accepted each yr by UMD from OOS due to these 2 factors.

I know many people would say yes it is a match, but as a Mom of an OOS student, UMDCP is becoming competitive, with each yr their acceptance rate has decreased, and certain schools at UMDCP are reknown internationally (Smith ranks the top 18 in the world). UMDCP is no 18 in the Nation for public universities. If I was to say chances, best chance is Spring admit for 11.

University of Wisconsin and Washing are above that, so I would say as OOS you are a high reach.

By USNWR UMDCP is considered Most selective with a 39% acceptance rate, BU is considered more selective with 54%. OSU has an acceptance rate of 64%, also considered more selective. Thus, your best chances are not UMDCP, but BU and OSU

Here is the accepted thread from ly. You will notice those that had lower stats than you were IS, and typically a URM.

With all of that said, nobody is on the admissions board and your ECs might be enough of a hook to get you in. The only way to be accepted is to apply. If you want to go there then apply, you do not live your life wondering what if.

Good Luck! Go Terps beat UVA!
