I’m currently a Junior and I would like to know what my chances of getting admitted to UPenn and Cornell are. I know these universities are extremely selective, so I’m not entirely sure if I should apply. I’d also appreciate if you have any recommendations.
GPA- 4.0 (unweighted)
I’m taking AP Macroeconomics and AP Spanish lit this year and I’ll take AP US history, AP Psych, and AP Calc next year so that will increase my weighted GPA.
SAT
I got 1400 on the new SAT but I plan on retaking it to get at least 1450. I never took the ACT.
Extracurriculars
Vice President of the Economics Club
National Honors Society Member (I’ll maybe run for officer next year)
Debate Team Captain (varsity)
Member of the Robotics Team (varsity)
Member of the National Hispanic Institute
Trilingual (I’d be an international student from Mexico, so I don’t know how that would affect my application)
I don’t play any sports
It’s hard to tell based on the given information so far. But I do agree with Sidvas that it is better for you to raise the score (for UPenn at least) to ensure that the apcom will not toss your app away before even looking at other parts of it.
I have already applied to Cornell, waiting for their decision. Good luck to both of us.
I think that being Mexican will help you, however being an international student may hurt you if you have financial need. Your SAT scores are definitely at an acceptable level to where your app will be read and your grades are solid. I would say that Cornell is a high match and UPenn is a low to mid reach depending on major (Wharton is more competitive than CAS for example). Just make sure to write good essays.
Your ECs are somewhat typical, however you being trilingual is very interesting. I recommend you apply to more than just Cornell and UPenn though, unless you plan on doing one ED and get accepted.
