Chances for Upenn communications?

I want to be a communications major and get into the field of comedy television, specifically writing and acting, nbc preferably. My freshmen year I had a 1.3 and my brother had non-hodge ins lymphoma, my second year I took 8 classes and finished with a 4.3. This year I'm taking 4 AP classes and an accelerated math class. I have (as far as I know) a 4.0 unweighted, am my schools AP US history representative, have an SAT of 2150, am, and have been, since sophomore year, taking my schools broadcasting class with a well received comedy show that I created. I run varsity cross country, play varsity tennis, volunteer 4 hours a week, and have an A in my schools rhetoric class. Last year I won most improved math and biology student, as well as best history/chem student. I won the county marine biology presentational award, and am writing a comedy play, as well as making a documentary. I'm aware Penn is one of the most exclusive communications schools in the country, do I have a shot?
P.S. Ive always been told that I have a deep voice and am told by practically every person I know that I should do TV or radio, if that changes anything (like maybe interview-wise). I can also write a he'll of an Essay (humility aside)

I think this is a great chance at being creative in your application and having it work for you (not sure exactly how- that’s your job). Can you send your work to a professional in the industry and have him write a recommendation? Maybe someone affiliated with the communication school+industry.
I think Penn is surprisingly forgiving of people who screwed up and made up. But I would advise against writing a sob story explanation.

Thanks alot!

Dude. I believe the procedure is that you apply to Penn first on a general level then, after your admission, you declare major later. So, except Wharton, every major at Penn is equally competitive. If you go for Communication then you will take classes at Annenberg (which is actually a grad school) but you are still a student at the College of Arts & Sciences and your degree will be issued by the College. Just to let you know.

On the other hand, of course it’s great to apply with a major in your mind because it strengthen your application. However, from my personal experience, most people at Annenberg are doing double-major because Comm major is the “most compatible” major. If you take COMM then you will have opportunity to double-count quite a few courses with other majors. So maybe you should try to inform the admission council of your intention to double major, they like ambitious people.
