Chances for UPenn, Cornell, Rice, UC Berkeley, CMU, NYU and Boston C RD!

I'll chance you back, so please take some time to assess these stats!

--About Me--
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: East Asian
I'm a US citizen going to an all-Chinese school in China. What's unique about this is that I came here in the 8th grade and didn't know diddly squat about Chinese. I don't know if this increases my chance or anything, but I feel that it sets me apart from the normal Asian applicant pool. After all, college admissions is a game of minority.

--Grades--

GPA: 3.84 (Huge upward trend on my Chines since 9th grade)
School doesn't do weighted GPA. In fact, it doesn't do UW GPA's
either, but the 3.84 was calculated by me on a pretty rigorous scale.
Class Size: 160 (Used to be 206, but a LOT of students left to study abroad)
Class Rank: Top 5%

--Testing--

SAT: 2230 single sitting (690 CR, 770 WR, 770 M)
SAT Subject Tests: 2380 composite (780 Physics, 800 Math II, 800 Chemistry)
AP: 5 Calculus AB, 5 Physics C Mechanics, 5 Chemistry

--Extracurriculars--

Research at university computer lab - 11, 12
QA Testing for communications software - 11, 12
Model UN - 10, 11
Theater: King Lear - Lead Actor, awarded Best Actor, 10th grade
High School Musical - Director, Organizer and Narrator (I had my hands full), 11th
Guitar - 9, 10, 11, 12
School Sports Club (just random sports. Nothing like JV/Varsity) - 9, 10, 11
Chinese Painting and Sketching - 9, 10, 11, 12

Volunteering: Orphanage in rural China
Tutoring elementary students English, sometimes Math, and occasionally
even Chinese.
Total hours: ~160

--Awards--

AP Scholar
Peking University Model UN Security Council - Most Potential (National Level)
Guangdong Biology Competition - Provincial 3rd Prize (Regional)
Province Chemistry Competition - Citywide 1st Prize (Regional)

Essays: GREAT
Recommendations: Two are great, one is good.

And, that's about it. I know my ECs are a little bit weak, but assess me anyways. Thanks CC, and I'll chance you back to the best of my ability!

bump… 10char

I think that going to school in china is going to hurt you more than it’s going to help you, but anyways, since your EC’s are so focused, here are my chances:
UPenn - low reach
Cornell - low reach
Rice -low reach
UC Berkeley -match to high match
CMU - match
NYU - match
Boston C - low match
GL!

ORM status is going to hurt, but you have good enough stats for all of these schools. Penn is a low-mid reach, while Cornell and Rice are low-reaches.

The others are matches or safeties.

Thanks, you two! It’s good to know I have a shot at UPenn and Cornell xD! I’m pretty confident I’m a bit more unique than the average Asian, but I’m not expecting that to help me a lot.

Bump, any more chances would be greatly appreciated. I’ll definitely chance you back.

2 replies and 165 views. At least give me a few phrases!

Bump.

I don’t know much about the colleges, but I thought I’d give you a general feel for what your application looks like.

You have excellent test scores; no worries there. I think it’s good that you have a variety of extracurriculars–both math/science based and theater. The most dedication you seem to show seems to be to theater, and your math/science ‘research’ seems a bit weak. I think your essays would pull that up, though, so I’ll say you have very good chances. Good luck!

Thanks for the chance, Sakari! I actually show a lot of depth in my research through my supplement essays.

bump again…

k in my opinion:
Ur SATs are really good, i can tell u that
and u havta look at international students in each school
for example i know NYU would enjoy have some more international students

its really tough, cuz im new at this but:
UPenn: Err… I would say low to mid match xD
Cornell: Low Reach
Rice: Match
UC Berekely: Match
CMU: Match
NYU: High Reach
Boston C: Low Reach

Reply if u get into one :P

I’m not an international, but thanks for the chance :)

If your essays are as great as you say, I think you have a good shot at all those schools! UPenn and Cornell are the only only “true” reaches.
Your scores are definately solid. Subject scores stand out.
All in all I would say you’re app is quite focused, which is good. It shows that you have a passion for science (chem, comp, biol). Nice national award. Only thing that could pull you back is ECs, like you said.
I think you’ll get in to most of those places  Good luck btw!

BTW - I responded to your chance at my thread, please have a look! :)

Cornell and UPenn are slight reaches but you have a decent shot a those. Berkeley is a match unless you’re out of state.

Grades: great
Tests: SAT Is aren’t amazing, great SAT IIs and APs
ECs: nothing jaw-dropping, but your theater participation gives you an edge besides the usual math whiz stuff. Your volunteer work is interesting.
Awards: good stuff

It’s kind of hard for me to judge on each college your likeliness of getting in (the Ivys and the other competitive schools are always hard for me to judge, considering they’re so unpredictable), but all around I think you’re good!

Thanks for chancing me btw

your decent at any of them just work the percentages and you should be fine. chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1025362-chances-texas-m-minnesota-etc.html</a></p>

Thanks guys! Bump.

Your test scores and gpa are graet and your EC’s are a definite solid… and from that I can tell you:

UPenn: Low Reach
Cornell: Low Reach
Rice: Match
UC Berekely: Match
CMU: Safety/Low Match
NYU: High Match

Thanks for chancing me and good luck!

Thanks!
One last bump and I’m through.

very good chance at all of them, really! nice scores, awards and good-ish ECS. Boston, NYU and CMU are almost definite acceptances. not sure about rice. Upenn, cornell and ucberk are matches/high-matches.
chance me!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1026499-chance-me.html#post1065839368</a></p>

i think if you can get up your reading score a little, you have a good chance at most of these colleges. Remember the thing with Cal is it is a public school so it is very hard to get in out of state. I do think you have a good chance at rice and cornell
Can you chance me

jlighter and airplaneman: Thanks for the replies! I’ll chance you back as soon as I finish typing this :P

and airplaneman, UPenn is like… one of the top ivies. I don’t think it qualifies as a match/high-match for anyone o.o
