I have been an upperclass mentor for freshman for two years, along with being a student ambassador for my school which entails going to middle schools and recruiting/advertising the school.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff, but what the hell. Probably going to apply Early Decision to UPenn, but might investigate Brown or Cornell for ED. Who knows? Any imput would be fantastic!

If you did well on your AP scores, make sure to put them in your application.

It looks like you took advantage of your schools honor and AP courses, so thats a plus.

Your sports participation is great. Any chance of getting recruited? Also your participation with the Gulf of Maine Institute is impressive. Make sure to highlight that in your application. Also, try getting a letter of recommendation from someone in that organization that knows you well. (Don't include the hours that you did in 7th or 8th grade....that doesnt count.)

Invited to National Youth Leadership Conferences in Washington D.C.? So do thousands of other students. They make it out to be such a prestigious program but it's not. Don't bother mentioning this.

Your list of clubs/hobbies feels a little padded to me. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: You're interests dont shine through in your activities. Are you into Environmental Science? You don't need to mention every club you're in (e.g. Political, Spanish, History, Philosophy) That's too much and youre interests seem WAY too scattered. Just mention clubs that you are very involved with.

So in your senior year, work on getting more leadership positions in clubs that interest you.

But you are (to me) an above average applicant for Cornell or Brown and an average applicant for UPenn. Look into a school that really interests you and apply ED. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for all the advice!

You don't need to retake your SAT IIs. Those scores are fine.
If you're just hellbent on getting into an Ivy, I'd recommend you do ED to Cornell since their ED acceptance rate is almost 12% higher than Penn's.

I was thinking about doing that, however a Cornell student told me that ED acceptance rate to the *College of Arts and Sciences * at Cornell is only 15%, compared to a much higher 42% total (all schools) for the university. That's why I have been more inclined to look at UPenn and Brown.

I'm pretty sure Penn has the same thing, like being 29% ED for all the schools combined, though Wharton by itself is only like 10% anyway. I'm sure CAS doesn't exceed 25% in itself. The Nursing School and Engineering seem to tend to have the higher admission rates.
Up you you though! :)

i would strongly advise against applying to cornell ED solely because of the odds. i applied to yale early even though my chances there were not that great and i was told that my chances at places like brown and cornell would be much, much higher if i applied ED. that said, i would've been upset if i got in, was forced to go because it was ED, and then realized that i had only applied there early to increase my chances. i did not end up getting into yale, so i had to go through the more selective and hellish process that is regular admissions, and i ended up getting into several ivies in the spring. if you're a qualified applicant, you'll get in even during regular admissions.

vf1990: I completely agree with you. I don't think that I will be applying to Cornell E.D. just for the reason that you mentioned. Truth be told, I would be so angry at myself if I were to find out I got in to UPenn or even Brown and be stuck going to Cornell. Good advice.

Does it help that I have a cousin that went to UPenn that is a mega-millionaire and contributes heavily to the school? I know he's not a parent or sibling, but he has definitely made it big and kept UPenn close to his heart. Perhaps a phone call or letter would be helpful?

I guess you can't use him as a legacy.
Though, if he dropped in a word, I guess you'd have a better chance than even having a legacy, if he donated millions to the colleges.
But I'd find that pretty cheap.

I'd definitely get him to write a friendly letter, make some friendly phone calls...it can only help

That's what I thought. It can't hurt I guess.

Would anyone be able to tell me my chances at getting into Upenn Wharton. I really want to get in to study actuarial science. It is a very small field and I hope that can count as somewhat of a hook.

SAT: 710 CR 730 MATH (I made stupid mistakes) 740 WRITE = 2180
SAT 2: 770 US HIST 720 MATH 2 (I messed up..i always seem to make stupid mistakes and mess up on math when I am good at it. I took practice tests and got numerous 800s.) I am planning to retake and get 800.

Hook: major in actuarial science???

Ethnicity - Asian
Region - FLorida, Public School
I am not an American citizen but I am Canadian... I dont know if that factors in.

Work on the SATs because Wharton's scores are through the roof. Also, you MUST have some direct business experience or exposure in order to be competitive. Try to find a unifying factor in your EC's, because if they don't relate to your passions/what you want to study, they mean nothing.

Good news is, being Asian and a Canadian can only help.
