Chances for UPenn ED Class of 2020

Hey guys. So junior year is coming to a close and I’ve already been thinking about college apps for quite a while. I’m pretty confident that I will apply to UPenn early decision as long as I make it through this year all right. I just want to realistically get an idea of what my chances are to get accepted ED from people that have been accepted or know a bit about the process. Anyway here’s my resume so far:

SAT I: 2350 (800M, 750CR, 800W, 9 Essay) on second attempt (2210 first try)
SAT II: Math, Chemistry, US History (taking them all at the end of the semester, pretty confident I can get 800 Math and Chemistry at least)
Unweighted/Weighted GPA: 3.96/4.8 as of now
Rank: None, highest grouping (not sure what the percentile is)
AP: European History, 4
(Calculus BC, US History, Chemistry) all this year, hopefully mostly 5’s and maybe one 4
Senior Course Load: Physics AP, Advanced Calculus/Statistics AP, AP Gov/Econ, Spanish 4 (AP), AP Lit, Digital Photography
(Subject to Change)
Major Awards: Probable National Merit Semifinalist (227 PSAT), possible National Merit Finalist (unlikely, heard it’s very hard to get), National Honor Society

Extracurriculars: Junior Varsity Tennis (2 years), California YMCA Youth & Government (Delegation Vice President, Lead Justice of the Appellate Court junior year, Forum Committee Chair freshman year)
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community Service: Volunteer at Toberman Neighborhood Center (underprivileged kids summer program)
Serving the homeless food at local church (Walteria Methodist)
Assistant at local elementary school math club (Cornerstone Elementary School)
Activity supervisor and tutor at Boys and Girls Club (Harbor City)
Summer Activities: John’s Hopkins CTY Summer Program (2-3 years), Quaker Peace Action Camp

Applying for Financial Aid: No
Intended Major: Political Science (hope Penn sees my extracurriculars are focused on politics and leadership and not scattered)
State: CA
School Type: Public, 3,000+ kids, ranked #165 in the nation
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: High enough that I can’t apply for financial aid, probably around $200,000+
Hooks: Legacy

Here’s what I have so far to add to my application. Obviously there is more stuff to add as I make it through the year, and things like recommendations and certain scores I cannot add yet. I would really appreciate some feedback on my chances at UPenn early decision for the Class of 2020. Thanks guys!

I predict an acceptance. Ur applying ED plus u have legacy for which d acceptance rate is about 40%

@icy1998‌ What school at Penn are you applying to?

You have a good chance ED to Penn CAS provided you have really good essays. The legacy will definitely help.

@235423 College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in political science

@icy1998‌ As an admitted RD CAS student to the class of 2019, I like your chances. Nobody can predict for sure, but I’d wager you’re significantly better than 50/50.

Any feedback appreciated!

I personally wouldn’t worry. Make sure to have safeties backed up though

@ImperialDeat Well, since I’m applying early, if I get deferred or rejected, I’m just going to send out a ton of apps during the regular decision round. Also, do you have any opinion on my chances? I wasn’t sure what you meant by telling me not to worry. Thanks for your input.

ECs are a bit light. Stellar stats though. I suggest you find a way to make your app stand out, that will give you extremely great chances. Take a risk with your essay. What are you planning to write about?

@0br0123 I’m not quite sure yet, but I’ll definitely start thinking about it now that you mentioned it. Thanks! Also is there any way you can quantify legacy? I hear at Penn they give it a lot of weight in the early decision round.

You’re absolutely correct. If anyone in your immediate family lineage attended UPenn, it is a huge hook in admissions. If not, you gotta stand out in another way.

Awesome! I feel pretty good about my odds. I just need to make it through these next 2 months and get to work on my application this summer.

@icy1998 “I personally wouldn’t worry” means you have good chances. Legacy helps you a lot, your SAT is above average by a good bit, ECs could be better, but legacy makes up for them. Make sure your essays are stellar

junior year looks light on aps
