Chances for UPenn

I have always been a die hard UPenn fan and plan on applying early decision.

As of right now I am nominated for Posse which is a scholarship program and UPenn is one of the 5 schools they do it for my city.

Please tell me if you think I have a chance for UPenn. You can be brutally honest.

Female
Hispanic (born in another country)
3.8 unweighted gpa; 5.5 weighted gpa
SAT 1910
ACT 31
I have only taken 3 APs (English Lit: 4, US Gov: 3, Comparative Gov: 2) I'm taking English Language, US History, and Calculus next year)
I plan on majoring in business
My class size is 50 and I go to dual enrollment high school meaning we take college classes.
I am getting my AA degree before graduating high school.
I have taken, as of right now, 12 college classes.

I am actively involved in orchestra (treasurer), thespians/drama, speech and debate (secretary), film club (founder/vice president), student government (ambassador), yearbook, and math club (president).

I volunteer at the science museum, where I tech shows, put on demonstrations/experiments for kids to watch.

I started an ACT/SAT tutoring program at my school because I know not everyone can afford a preparation course.

I am a pretty good writer and looking forward to my essays. I am very creative.

Don't do any sports, but I am athletic with my mind in the academic and artistic sense.

If I don't get accepted early decision, I also plan on applying to University of Michigan, Virginia, Florida, and Miami.

You’ve definitely done a lot of great things! Starting an SAT tutoring program shows a lot of initiative and you have lots of leadership positions. In a difficult school (mine is very difficult as well) your GPA is understandable. Just try to raise your SAT. If you can really focus on business and takes lots of classes and do EC’s related to business, you’ll stand out. I think if you raise your SAT and focus on business, you would have a good chance! Just get that SAT up!!
Good luck! Would you mind commenting on my forum with my chances for Princeton? Thanks!

To be honest, I think it’ll be a high reach. Your EC’s are ok, but your SAT is low for UPenn standards. Your ACT isn’t too bad, but it would help if it were maybe in the 32+ range. I think one advantage you have is that you are a URM. If you can boost your scores, I think you’ll have a fair shot at UPenn.

Hmmm… I am also nominated for Posse (Atlanta). I am guessing you are from Miami. I think it will be a reach, but it is doable. Just know that the credit from the college you are currently taking won’t necessarily transfer. You just need to write a great essay.

The only reason I went to my school was to take more dual enrollment courses and for the AA to give me an edge for applications. I don’t mind that it won’t transfer.

Honestly I think your shot is as good as other qualified students. Maybe your sat isnt the best but I bet your act will certainly do. Make sure you take subject tests though

To be honest, I dont see you getting into UPenn. Your GPA is okay, compared to UPenn standards, and your ECs are pretty good. However, your test scores are glaringly subpar (SAT must be 2200+ and ACT must be 32+). Your URM status won’t help enough to counteract your low test scores. Also, your AP test scores aren’t good at all (a 2 is shamefully low for UPenn standards). Also, since you plan on majoring in business, you will be applying to Wharton, which is the most selective UPenn program by far. Acceptance into Wharton has been compared to acceptance to Harvard, and Wharton is the top ranked business school in the nation.

By the way do you know the actual national rate of getting a Posse scholarship? It’s like the best scholarship in the world. Good luck.

I love everything about Posse and what they stand for. I’m hoping it’ll help me get into UPenn since they are all about the underdogs and people that might be overlooked in the application process.

I may not have “perfect” test scores, but Posse will hopefully help them get to know who I am and how I will excel at their school.

I hope you get it! My school had 8 finalists this year. One of my friends got it for UPenn and she said I have a chance.

Being a URM will be very beneficial, try to get your ACT up to at least a 33. GPA is pretty good, have you taken all the APs offered? EC’s are decent because of the leadership. I would say you have a decent shot but since you’re applying to Wharton, its a mid reach for you currently. Writing good essays might tip the scale in your favor but its still pretty iffy (as it is for 99% of applicants).

Chance me back!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1363953-chance-me-please.html

The school i currently go to forces you to take the 3 APs I took this year.
So the one I got a 2 in was not a choice of class.

What is your class rank or estimated percentile?

Approx. top 15% mind you my class size is 50.

URM or not, those test scores are not penn level nor is the rigor of your schedule (the AA won’t help that much). ECs are rather weak. THE FACT THAT YOU ARE APPLYING TO WHARTON WILL MAKE THE POSSIBILITY OF YOU GETTING REJECTED EXTREMELY HIGH.

On a side note, the Rhodes Scholarship is actually the best scholarship in the world to the foolish hokurascholar

Just wanted to give an update on my post from a while back…

Posse ended up dropping UPenn in the end so I quit Posse and just did early decision.

I became a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar.

My SAT increased to a 1970, ACT remained a 31, and I got pretty average scores on my SAT IIs:

Math 1 720
Lit 620
Math 2 670

My essays ended up being amazing and my SAT prep program is also doing very well.

This may come as a shock to a lot of you, but I was actually deferred from Wharton.

Test scores aren’t everything.

I have high hopes for getting in regular decision! GO QUAKERS :)

The SAT scores should be at least 2200 and I think subject tests may be required. Good EC’s though. This should be a high reach. Try to blow them away with the essays.

Chance back please!

And now my final post in this thread…

YES…I got in regular decision.
