I have an 1810 sat and 3.82 unweighted gpa. Lots of extracurricular activities, clubs, leadership positions, and on varsity cheer for 3 years. I also do not need any financial aid. What are my chances for getting accepted for fall 2014 to USC?

USC: reach
that sat is way too low for usc. you would need a near perfect gpa to make up for it

Does that mean even if you are really well balanced/ have lots of volunteer and extracurricular it doesn’t matter as much? My weighted is higher! Definitely a reach!

Sat is very low (220 below the lower quartile for admits). GPA is dead average, but you provide no info on course rigor, so its hard to evaluate that.

I agree with the above poster, definite reach.

see: http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/documents/FreshmanProfile2013FINAL.pdf

What is your weighted GPA and the AP classes you took? That would assist in the chance process.

I have over a 3.9 weighted. I have taken IB sciences, social studies, and business. I have also only taken academic electives, never an easy filler class. I take IB psychology and business for 2 years as just my electives! My SAT is what is holding me back, hopefully it doesn’t hold me back too much, but I’m afraid it will.

Even your weighed-GPA will not help you. If you can’t redo your SATs, definitely a reach.

So it seems that SAT scores pretty much determine if you can get in?

I suggest reading the following thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1558825-what-my-chances-usc-final-answer.html

The short answer is that your application will be viewed in its entirety and admissions will take into consideration your class rigor, your GPA, your LORs, your ECs and your SATs. You have a strong GPA, but grading scales vary widely across schools. Your admissions counselor will know about your school and will understand how your GPA stacks up against other schools.

Your SAT is very low for USC. Standardized test scores try to gauge everyone on the same level. There are a number of studies linking college success with test scores. All things being equal (even though they never are), it’s reasonable to expect the admissions committee to prefer students with higher scores than with lower ones.

I would call it a reach. To be honest your SAT score is too low to make USC a match. However, with great recommendations, essays, and ECs, you can absolutely get in.
