2130 SAT, 800 CR, 650 M, 680 W. Want to get BA in theatre. top ten percent of class. no AP's as school is very small and only option is online and out of pocket costs for family. Some EC's. Acting since 3rd grade, several lead parts. Good musician too. play several instruments. honors service club at school. Spent one summer job leading a number of weekly children's camps. Expect to get at least decent recs. possible national merit semi-finalist. Live on other side of country. I think admission chances are decent. hoping acting background will help with admissions. Don't think scholarship chances(other than national merit) are that great.

Anyone familiar with USC, please look at my thread too.

Your SAT is around the mid-point but you don’t share your UWGPA but with a top 10% I’ll assume a 3.7. With that you’re an average admit at a school that, this year, will admit less than 20% of its applicants. Because of the low admit rate I think everyone needs to think of USC as a bit of a reach, but otherwise I think you have a fair chance.

As for theater, are you planning on applying to a major requiring an audition? That will have a big impact. Also if your are a NMSF and designate USC as your first choice, that often leads to a very nice merit aid scholarship.

A half-ride at USC if you make NMF…

But is theater harder to transfer into than another major?

GPA is 96 on a 100 point scale. not sure if colleges will translate that to 4.0 or 3.85. Weigted and unweighted are similar. school does not break it down so we don’t have exact numbers on that. 96 is an A average at kid’s school(this is parent making post BTW). No, kid is unlikley to go audition route. BA fits their personality better and is more flexible. Yes, we know about NM scholarship and are grateful for it, given USC’s costs… I agree best to presume USC is a reach. I’m guestimating odds are around 40 percent for admission. I think scholarship is unlikely if kid does not make NM cut though. Decent shot at Deans’ without NM but unlikely to get more than that. thanks for the advice. Kid plans to apply regardless and see what happens. thanks again.

At USC’s percentage admit rate for most students the college will be a reach, but I think your child has a decent shot. I would have your child sit the SAT again as a higher score will help. Write a good essay and see.

Thanks to all for your advice. Sixpensce, I’m thinking maybe kid should just take the math subject test instead of whole SAT again. If they can do great on it, they have made point they’re competitive in math too. Do you or anyone else have thoughts on that? Their CR score is great so there is no benefit to retaking that even with superscoring. I’ll have to look at ACT too and see if they want to take that test We’ll be visiting USC soon and can take it from there after visit. Kid is already on track for admissions and pretty nice scholarships at other schools so they may not want to retake test. My guess is if they are dying to go to USC(which is likely after visit!, they’ll be motivated enough to prep hard for test) We’ll see And I’m also thinking with the subject test being shorter and only one topic(unless they sit for 3 at one time), that should maximize their chances of getting a high score.
