Chances for USC Viterbi

Hey everyone!
I recently visited USC and I’ve fallen in love with it. Its engineering program is really top notch and I’d love to get in for Mechanical Engineering. I was wondering if you kind people might be able to tell me whether or not it would be worth my time to apply to the Viterbi College of Engineering.

If Viterbi seems out of my reach, I’ll most likely apply to Dornsife (letters, arts, and sciences) for Physics.

SAT: 2040

AP Courses: World History, Calculus BC, Physics C (Mechanics), English Language/Composition, English Literature/Composition, Microeconomics, US Government, Spanish, Music Theory

EC: Officer in drama club (11, 12), President and founder of Astronomy club (11, 12) , NHS (10, 11, 12), track and field JV (10) Varsity (11, 12), drama productions (9, 10, 11, 12)

GPA (Unweighted): 3.77
GPA (Weighted): 4.02

Employment: Sandwich shop employee - I make sandwiches and do dishes and all of the general restaurant business. I’ve been saving my earnings and I am planning on putting them towards a new guitar and other musical equipment.

Info about Letters of Rec:
I’ve gotten 2 letters of rec so far. One is from my calculus/physics teacher, most likely describing my work ethic and my love of math and physics. The other is from my english teacher with whom I am very close. He will most likely say that I am well rounded (i.e. playing music, performing in school plays, participating in athletics, and still maintaining a respectable GPA). I have not and will not read their letters, I’m just assuming this is what they will say. Regardless, though, both teachers have lots of experience writing strong letters of recommendation.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. I appreciate it very, very much.

@ACJones98 my daughter is a freshman at Viterbi this year and her stats were similar to yours…a 2050 SAT but her GPA was a 4.0 UW and 4.7 W. They definitely look for well-rounded students and rejected many 4.0s and perfect SATs last year. She also fell in love with the engineering school at USC and is a Mechanical Eng major. She LOVES it! One thing USC admission says is that ALL schools are competitive so if Viterbi rejects you, it’s not likely that another school will accept you. So I say go for Viterbi! and put a 2nd choice major in there as well just in case. Good luck and if you have any questions about the application feel free to ask me! I’ve been through this with 2 daughters now and I have the application process down to a science!

Neither your GPA nor SAT is stellar for USC and as such your chances are not that good.

@uclaparent9 @stephrass I made a mistake on my GPA when I entered it in the thread. I have a 3.84 UW and a 4.2 W. My SAT score is the same, so I don’t know how much, if at all, this changes my chances, but this is the actual information. Thank you both for taking the time to post. I really appreciate it.

Did you take any SAT Subject test?
What dept of USC did you apply?

@ACJones98 I have nearly identical stats!! 3.87 UW GPA/2050 SAT(1430 CR+M). I am also applying for Viterbi (Computer science and Business administration joint degree). From what others have told me, I believe you’re a low reach/high match! Hope we both get in!

I think it’s a low reach. Good luck!
Chance back?

Could someone chance me? 4.0 UW GPA (4.314 W), 34 ACT (didn’t report SAT cuz they only asked for one and i felt an extra $11 would be a waste of money lol). EC’s: Science Club (Founder, 12), MU Alpha Theta (Vice President, 10,11, 12), National Honor Society (Treasurer, 11, 12), Several volunteering things at my local church and a summer camp for disabled children, an internship for a non-profit that provides funding and resources to poor schools around the world (involved in startup of a new program that educates seniors and college students of the costs of college), a position as social media/communications manager for a fashion website, one award (not too good…just 3rd place at regional science fair), and my dad attended USC back in his day (legacy). Also IB Diploma candidate with 4 AP’s under my belt (scored all 5’s on them)

Dude you can’t hijack threads. Make your own @Dorfdude8 .

You’re name is Chandler Jones. That is legit funny considering the circumstances. Go Pats! And I agree with what other people are saying.

@uclaparent9 I ended up applying to Dornsife as a physics major. I did not take any subject tests, but I did get an interview with a representative from Dornsife that I think went really well.
@wingear Good luck to you too! Hopefully we’ll see each other on campus in the fall.
