Chances for UT-Austin?

I'm in Dubai right now and I will go to Texas for a gap year to establish residency. I am a US citizen. I will be applying as a freshman for Fall 2012. Of course I did not graduate High School from a Texas high school -and making things even worse-, not even from an American High School. I did it right over here in Dubai.

So this Top %10 Automatic Admission will definitely not be working to my advantage - especially more-so because my school doesn't even provide rankings.

I will take the ACT and hopefully, HOPEFULLY score a composite 31. I'm doing A-levels (it's a British System kinda thing, for those who don't know) and I might get up to 30 credit hours just for that.

I will write up some good essays. I did some interesting things in High School (extra-curriculars that is) so I can put up some stuff on the application.

You think I got a high chance? If I don't, will transferring from Austin Community College help more (if I get 3.0+ GPA)?

I don’t know enough to tell you what your chances are. My son got accepted as an OOS student, though, and his school didn’t rank.

Are you aware that the residency rules are changing? Starting in the fall, it will be more difficult to qualify as an in-state residency. Have you talked to the people at UT to make sure you do everything right?

Good luck!

Thanks!

Umm really? I did speak to them and I read on their website.
They told me I have to get a job (in Texas of course) by September 15th of this year to qualify for in-state tuition. I have to rent for 12 months too. Anything else that might be significant?

And what do you want to know about me to tell whether I can make it or not?
My IGCSE’s were (I hope you know what IGCSE’s are): 4A*s 2As 1B
My AS’s were: 2B’s 1C
A-levels: Out this August

I will apply for ENGINEERING BTW! Which makes this all harder of course.

Extra-curricula (only for senior year): Class president/Basketball team member/Head of Debate club/Sold some Fast Food in school/Newsletter Reporter.

I can think up some more though and I have (not much more) for my other High School years but mainly because I lived in SAUDI ARABIA! Haha its a scary thought but most schools over there don’t even provide extra-curricular activities. Us, the students, had to START this “extra-curricular” stuff.

And congrats for your son btw! He must have been one smart kid to be one of the few Out of Staters to make it in.

I’m sorry, I don’t know enough to be of any help. You might want to put down engineering as your first choice, and science as your second choice. It’s easier to get into science, so if you don’t get accepted to engineering, you could transfer later.

It sounds like you’re on top of the residency requirements, so that’s good!
