Chances for UT Austin

Hey guys! I'm entering my senior year this year and I am a little overwhelmed about the college admissions process so I was looking for a little feedback. I intend to stay in-state for college and study mechanical engineering at UT Austin but I am unsure if my credentials are good enough. I'm ranked 127/567 students (Top 23%). My GPA is 3.33 out 4 (unweighted) and 4.833333 out of 6 (weighted). I don't know if this factors in at all but my grades have improved a lot each year. I've taken all honors/AP/pre-ap classes thus far. I also took the SAT and got a 2030 (610 CR, 800 M, 620 W). I scored an 800 on the SAT Math 2c subject test and a 740 on the U.S. History subject test. I've played 4 years of tennis in high school and I am a part of multiple honors societies and clubs. I haven't volunteered extensively but I do so occasionally (55-65 hours over the course of high school). I appreciate any criticism or feedback you provide. Thanks!

Bump bump bump

Your gpa is low for UT. You have a good sat but I don’t know if that will make up for it. It definitely won’t for engineering.

If you put your second major choice as something like undergraduate studies or liberal arts you would definitely have a better shot that with engineering. I read on the collegedata website that the average admitted freshman gpa is around 3.6 .The top 10% students take up most of the freshman spaces.

GPA & rank are not helpful. You would not fare well in holistic review at UT. I think you are an academic auto admit at TAMU.

If you are deadset on UT you can do CAP. Or you can got to TAMU then apply as transfer to UT. Be aware that TAMU engineering is also competitive so you need to apply ASAP.

I can’t control the performance of my peers, but by using my junior year grades I suspect my new rank to rise about 30-35 spots. Assuming the class size shrinks, I believe I’ll be 97/545 (Top 18%). Does that give me at least an outside chance? I’m really hoping the schools I want to attend can see my potential. I really messed up my freshman year (not a single A in any class).

I agree with JAMCAFE. Your GPA and rank are big obstacles to overcome. The SAT score is OK but could also be better. UT is just so competitive. If you are thinking about engineering or business I think you will be a long shot.

You are an auto admit to A&M.

For 2014 auto admit at UT will be top 7%. You can imagine that there will be many students in holistic review who are top 8, 9, 10 …

So apply to UT but realise its a reach. Maybe pick a major in a less competitive college than college of engineering as your second choice.

Well, I feel privileged to even have a slim chance. Thanks for all the posts/advice, I’ll try to make the best of the situation.

Good Luck! Your perfect score in Math means a bit more than slim chance  Put a lot of effort into your essays, recs etc.
