Hello, I am a senior at a very competitive high school in the Dallas area. I was wondering what are my chances are for UT Dallas.I know that I am not an automatic admit :( Here are my stats:

Weighted GPA (don't know unweighted) : 3.93
Class Rank: 229/1256 (Top 18%)
SAT (superscored): M= 580, CR=590, W=580
EC'S: National Honor Society-completed more than 50 hours of community service (member since 10th grade)
Business Professionals of America- Secretary during senior year (member in 11th grade)
Communities in School-peer tutored other students (was part of this organization only in sophomore year)

Decent Essay C (which is the only one they look at)
One letter of recommendation from my AP US History teacher last year

Being within the top 20% will help. Where else have you applied?
You should have a couple more schools of varying levels, selected after you ran the Net Price Calculator.
Based on your stats and profile, I’d say Hendrix and Rhodes are reaches, but Trinity-TX, Austin College, Southwestern, Saint Louis U, and Eckerd, would be matches; Texas State, UTampa, Maryville (MS), and Millsaps would be safeties.

@MitchIsTheMan97 thanks for the reply!
@MYOS1634 thank you also for the reply! Besides utd ,I have applied to UT Austin, Texas A&M, baylor, UT Arlington, and university of North Texas. I have already been accepted to UT Arlington and UNT

UT Austin and TAMU are highly improbable due to class rank; Baylor, perhaps, but are you Baptist, and are you okay with the religious requirements? UTA and UNT would be safeties for you so i’m not surprised you’ve already been admitted. So now you need to find 2-3 schools that are academic matches (because UTA and UNT are okay, but probably not very challenging for you) and where your odds are better than at UT or TAMU - private schools where rank doesn’t matter and where you’d get a good financial aid package. You can start with the schools I listed above, running the Net Price Calculators and cutting out all those that are out of budget for your family. (You do need to run the NPCs for each college, since each college calculates differently.) Then you can look for more if that’s not enough. :)

@MYOS1634 I know that UT is not very likely for me since I want to do business ( McCombs is #6 in the nation :/) but is tamu business actually that difficult to get into? I know the holistic review process is competitive but not as competitive as UT… are my chances for tamu actually that low??

yes, if you’re above top 10% your odds of being able to choose your major diminish the further away from top 10% you are… and 18% is pretty much as far as can be without tripping over 20%…

okay. For UT, my 1st choice major was business and my second choice major is “School of Undergraduate Studies” which basically means undecided. Do you think i have any chance of getting into UT as undecided? Also my brother currently goes to UT (if that affects my chances at all)
thanks for all the help so far :)

They typically choose those between 8 and 10% in ranking first; keep in mind that there are out of state students, athletes, other students they want to have for whatever reasons. Odds are very very low, even if Undergraduate studies helps a little. You’ll probably get CAP. If CAP’d and it’s affordable, it would be a good option to consider.
But do look into the universities listed above, as a starting point, running the net price calculators.
You may also want to check out TCU?

@Catria thanks for the reply @MYOS1634 Okay thanks for the feedback and I’m focusing a lot more on UTD instead which I think I have a better shot at. Tcu is a little too expensive for me though

Have you run the net price calculator on TCU and the other colleges listed?
As I said, Texas public universities may NOT be the best deal for you.
The “sticker price”, the price that you see, is NOT the price that every family has to pay. Each college decides how much you’ll pay and each has their own formula. Therefore, you MUST go to the net price calculator and see how much each college would cost for your family. It can double or even triple depending on the university… or be halved!
To find the NPC, type “net price calculator” + “…” <- name of the university.

The SAT scores do not support a claim of attending a very competitive high school in Dallas. It might be very competitive among a great number of high schools in the DFW area, but it is hardly very competitive on a larger scale.

The ranking between 8 to 20 percent will not help you much for TAMU and UT. Your chances were to score a much higher SAT, and that did not happen.

This said, you stand a very good chance to be accepted at UTD. You are between a highly likely (safety) and likely (mathc) and should be in the admissions’ soft spot.

You might be accepted at TAMU or UT through CAS or summer acceptance, but your chances for the business major are very mininal, and probably nil at McCombs by a fair margin.

Your chances at TCU are not much better than at UT or TAMU. If you can manage the net costs, your chances would be better at SMU or Baylor. All in all, UTD, despite being a local school for you, is probably your best bet, and a solid choice for many. The school is much better than its reputation and suffers from being in a Dallas suburb. Several of its business related programs are really good.

@xiggi I wasn’t trying to say my SAT scores are competitive. I was trying to say my school in general is very competitive (lots of people in ap / honors classes and lots of smart kids). I know my SAT score is pretty average (and that’s only cuz I’m not a good test taker)… Anyways I know my chances aren’t good for ut or a&m. If i do get accepted to UT through CAP program, is it even worth it since (from my understanding) cap only gives you automatic admission to natural scienc, liberal arts, and undergrad schools but not business? If I do CAP, I would go to UT Arlington if that matters
