I just got back scores from my first SAT and I'm a rising senior for 2012. I go to a rural high school in Virginia where most of the top students end up at UVa, W&M, or Virginia Tech.

UW GPA: 4.0
W GPA: 4.6something
SAT I: 2270 (780 CR, 760 M, 730 W)
SAT II: none yet
Class rank: 1st, currently
Ethnicity: Asian/Pacific Islander (I'm Filipino, I dunno which one to put). Edit: I forgot to mention that I'm a first-generation immigrant. I moved here when I was 9 from the Philippines, if that matters at all.
Gender: Male
State: Virginia
APs: Euro (5), Psych (5), US, English Language. For senior year I'm taking Stats, US Govt, and Computer Science A.

Extracurriculars:
Yearbook - editor (10th-12th)
TSA - various offices (8th-12th). I've either participated individually or have been part of a team for lots of top 3 entries/competitions at the regional and state level, and one top 5 finish at the national level last year.
NHS
I help out at my dad's taxidermy shop at home. I also program and I intend on majoring in EE/CE/CS. I started playing around with programming in 8th grade and have built websites (for money), and a few games (one of which was a simple RPG-type game where I did all the artwork and coding).
I think that's it...I may have forgotten a club :P

Prospective schools:
UVa
W&M
Stanford
UChicago
Berkeley
CMU
...and any other strong CS schools I may have forgotten haha.

Thanks!

UVa - Match
W&M - Match
Stanford - High Reach
UChicago - Mid Reach
Berkeley-Mid Reach (b/c Out of State)
CMU - Low Reach

SAT (esp. considering retake) and gpa will be good. ECs are the main downside and will make top schools like Stanford tough to get into. I think website design is cool… maybe work on expanding it over summer, reach a milestone, and that would stand out.

William&Mary- Unsure
UVA- Match
Berkeley- Match
CMU- Low Reach
UChicago- Mid Reach
Stanford- Reach (especially for an out-of-Cali student)

Your extracurriculars are a bit weak and it’ll be easier to make a prediction with SAT II scores as well :)

If you can improve your ECs then I think you are solid as far as W&M and UVA since you are instate. Most of your other options (Stanford/Berk) are still slight reaches just by their nature. You might want to also look into Georgia Tech. Its has a great nationally respected CS program. Also, tons of fantastic internship/research opportunities.

I think you should definitely take SAT 2s and get great scores on them. As long as you show the same performance during your senior year (in terms of grades), I think you are guaranteed to get into UVa (since you are in-state) and probably W&M. (W&M tends to make surprising decisions regardless of your stats)

Thanks for the replies. I forgot this info, somehow:

Expecting NMSF/NMF (231 PSAT)

Scholastic bowl (11-12th), probably gonna be co-captain next year, maybe.

What are my chances for Cornell? Also, how can I showcase my interest in programming - do I send code I’ve written with my application, or make a blog of some sort? And one last question - what would be a good score to aim for in the SAT 2s?

You have ok chances for Cornell. For SAT 2s, it’s not unreasonable to aim for 800s. In the math II, for example, around 10% of those who take it get 800. There are similar results for chem and physics. In terms of the programming interest, do what you would like and try to grow it into something big. For example, you could try to work with small businesses in the area and start building and maintaining websites for them or something. This is just an idea, but it would stand out if you did something that maybe only a few applicants did.

bump, mainly to get more opinions on cornell

Those SAT II stats are somewhat misleading because of the self-selecting population that takes Math II, Chem, and Physics.

i hate doing this, but bump again haha

DON’T PUT ASIAN!!! Put pacific islander, much easier to get into Stanford most likely b/c they have an overabundance of asians applying.

W&M: Match
UVA: Match
Chicago: Low-Mid Reach, if you write good essays though, it’s a high match b/c they love good essays more than anything else
CMU: High Match-Low Reach
Stanford: You’re competitive and that’s all you can hope for, but you’re really without any massive hooks, so it’s a bit of a crapshoot, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get in, try to write a fabulous essay and apply EA, and you never know what might happen :)

You have weak EC’s, so

UVa- low match
W&M- match
Stanford- high reach
UChicago- high match
Berkeley- high match
CMU- high match

Agree with AnonymousStudent, put Pacific Islander as your nationality. Are you a first-gen college student? It sounds like you might be and that’s a nice hook to have on your side.
