Chances for UVA Transfer

Hi,

I took the A Levels in 2014 and am enrolled in NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and completed a semester. I am planning to transfer to the US this coming fall semester (2016). I am applying to a few schools: UVA, UICU, Michigan State, Uni of Minnesota Twin Cities and NC State. My grades are as follows:

A Levels
H2 History: A
H2 Econ: A
H2 Math: B
H1 Chem: C
H1 PW: A
H1 GP: B

NUS: CAP 3.83/5.0 after cancelling grades that are C and above

SAT: 1980/2400

Is there a chance for me in UVA or the other schools I am applying to? Also, is it better for me to enroll into a community college first then transferring out? Any opinion will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi there,

Your GPA is low for UVA. They look at admissions “holistically,” but they also like a high GPA. Your essays and reasons for transferring will make or break your application.

Your stats give you a good chance at Michigan State, MN Twin Cities (although I hear it is getting more competitive every year) and maybe NC state and UICU assuming you are NOT applying for engineering.

If you love UVA, your best bet is to enroll in community college, and get the required GPA for UVA’s guaranteed transfer.

Within Virginia, your grades, SATs, and international background make you a good candidate for George Mason University. You have shot at the College of William and Mary. (Especially if you are male - W&M has more women than men right now and may use transfers to try to address this.)

Both have good reputations with Washington area employers and grad schools, with College of W&M being the clear winner for graduate school admission.

Good luck.

Hi, thank you for your reply! I’m applying for a double major in economics and mathematics. Are there any other schools that I have better chances in but also recognised for their strong economics program? May I also ask what makes a compelling transfer essay?
