chances for vandy/emory/w&l/wash U in st louis/davidson

Hey! Here are my stats:

gpa: 3.72
To put this into perspective, according to my school's naviance account, the average accepted gpa is a 4.13 for regular and 3.98 for early, and the lowest accepted was a 3.09

act: 32 (I am currently taking act prep and hopefully will bring this up one or two points)
eng: 34 math: 28 science: 31

the only sat subject test I've taken so far is US history: 730

Junior year APs: English lang, US history, Economics
Senior APs: English lit, Psych, Bio, Spanish, Statistics

I really would love to go to Vanderbilt (probably applying early decision), but I'm afraid that it's a bit of a reach. I also really liked Washington and Lee, Wake Forest (which my counselor said was a 50/50 before I got a 32 on my ACT), and Davidson, and am planning on possibly visiting Emory and Washington University in St. Louis

I have plenty of safeties and 50/50s that my guidance counselor recommended, but I wanted to know if I have a chance at these colleges! Any advice would be great, especially percent chance of getting in, whether something is a low reach/high reach, ect.

Thanks so much!

What are your extra curriculars?

also, I forgot to add my extracurriculars:
-month long school sponsored exchange/language emersion program in Spain (summer 2012)
-3 week school sponsored study trip to France (summer 2011)
-girl scout bronze/silver/gold award
-secretary treasurer of service club (sophomore year)
-track team captain (sophomore year)
-freshman advisor (sophomore year)
-honors list every semester freshman and sophomore years, dean’s list both semesters of junior year

bumppppppppp

Hi there! I thought I’d throw in my 2 cents, since my stats were pretty similar coming out of high school (slightly lower GPA, slightly higher ACT, but overall pretty similar).

I think Vandy will be a reach, but definitely a possibility. So are Davidson and WashU. Wake, W&L, and Emory will be matches.

You seem to have a good list of schools, but you might want to think about applying to a few more. I’ll put in a shameless plug for my alma mater Tufts (match/reach). It’s really similar to Vandy (though a bit more like Wash U and Emory) but it’s slightly easier to get into than Vandy, and I think you’d like it there. You might also want to consider Furman (safety) since you don’t have any safe ones on your list… except for maybe Emory, which is slightly safer than a true “match.”

In an effort to improve your application, work on your EC’s. Girl Scouts is great, but after that, there’s not too much meat, and there really isn’t anything that shows long-term commitment. In order to quickly make up for this deficit, start a club at your high school at the very start of the school year. What are you passionate about? Politics, the environment, art, etc… look for something that you’re passionate about and that there is no club for at your school and start it!

good luck!

Thanks so much for your help! And I am actually thinking about looking at Tufts this summer so now I definitely will! Does anyone else have any suggestions?

anyone else?

Wake is now test optional. don’t know if that helps. I think W&L is a reach as much as Davidson is. Ds applied to many of these. Be sure and check since I think Davidson requires one of the SATII to be in math (check on this). All very expensive schools…hope cost is not a factor. I think you need more safeties. If you like small, also look at Sewanee, which is also test optional.

Thanks so much!

I’ll also add my two cents. I would visit and interview at all of the schools you listed - especially Davidson, W&L, & Wake. The smaller liberal art schools track interest.

Vanderbilt is an enigma to me of who gets in and who doesn’t. Son was waitlisted - he visited, applied for Chancellor scholarship (and was also nominated by his HS college counseling office - although the nomination is optional). NMF (won the $2500 award). SATs 760/740/760. Tops of class at strong private school. Very strong ECs leadership etc. Varisty sports and leads in play. In everywhere (most with significant scholarship money, except Williams and Columbia who don’t give merit) and waitlisted at Vanderbilt. Naviance had all greens around him - it didn’t make sense.

So…I would agree that you have good chances at the schools you are applying to but throw in a more “safe” school thats similar to the schools you mentioned.

s2012D2017, don’t mean to do a chance plug here, but our D has 2380 (CR 800, M 800 W780) any idea about Cornelius and propably even admission. You are scaring me, those are great stats.
