Chances for various universities

For all those who've been through college applications and congratulations to all those who made it to universities you desired to enroll to. I need your help.

I'm an international student, a Korean, studying in an American ineternational school in Singapore. My school is very small-size, but not a bad school. Last year's graduating class had a UCLA, a Northwestern, and a Texas A&M for top students out of 18 seniors.

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 3.40
GPA - Weighted: 3.73
Class Rank: top 25%
Class Size: 100

Scores:

SAT I Math: 800
SAT I Critical Reading: 620
SAT I Writing: 720

SAT II Math Level 2 (IIC): 800
Planning to take Physics and a language, probably Japanese.

Extracurriculars:

Significant Extracurriculars: Rugby 2years as a flanker
American Football in Singapore for a season as nose guard
F1 in School (on-going, preliminary on 13th July)
Leadership positions: Planning to make a club during following semester, maybe archery.

Athletic Status - list sport and your level: Rugby for 2 years was in varsity and regularly appeared. 2, 6th position medals.
American football non varsity

Volunteer/Service Work: Annual trip to developing countries:
-10th grade: to Manila, Philippines serving at an orphanage for a week
-11th grade: to Shalom, India serving at non-profit organization for a week.

Honors and Awards: - 2 6th position medals for rugby
- AP Calculus (result not out yet), Honors American Literature 11

I can possibly bring up my GPA to 3.5 UW, which is still bad but yeah. Oh and I've already taken TOEFL and got enough to fulfill minimum requirements for all universities stated below.

Oh the list of universities i'm going to apply to (some are too ambitious, but still)

University of Southern California

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Carnegie Mellon University

New York University (stern or applied mathematics major)

University of Texas at Austin

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Emory University

Washington University at St. Louis

Cornell University

Boston College, Boston university

UC Berkeley, LA and Irvine.

USC: Low reach
UoMichigan: Low match
Carnegie: Reach
NYU: I’m pretty sure someone’s answered this already.
UT @ Austin: Low match
UNC @ Chapel Hill: Reach
Emory: Low Reach
WU @ St. Louis: High Reach
Cornell: Extremely high reach
Boston U: Low match
Boston C:Low Reach
UC Berkeley: Reach
UCLA: Reach
UC Irvine: Possibly safety

I may or may not be extremely inaccurate with my chancing.

By the way, I think you should try to improve your CR score. It’s on the low end of a lot of these schools. I guess it’s okay, and it’s not like SATs are everything, but…

Agree with above poster^^ on all schools. You have too many reaches on this list. Use college date dot com and put in a large list of schools. You need a lot more targets and a couple safeties. I hope we haven’t disappointed you, but I think it’s better that you know now, so that you have time to come up with a more realistic list. Still keep a couple or 3 of these reaches, and then focus on finding similar schools with lower accepted GPA rates. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply:D I know I should buck it up at least to 700s. Is possibility reach<match <=“” safety?=“” and=“” low=“”>high? sorry I’m not too familiar with these terms:/ I’ll have Purdue as my safety then and maybe Indiana Bloomington. again, thanks a lot. oh yeah and 3.73 is out of 4.4 not 5.0. so out of 5.0, my weight GPA would be 4.23. Does it make a difference?</match>

you should retake your SAT, your reading score doesnt match with your math and writing.

Yeah, reach<match<safety. Low match<High match (when I say it, at least). High reach<Low reach.

Unfortunately, I’m pretty clueless when it comes to different kinds of GPA, so I can’t answer the GPA question.

@SeattleBulldog, yeah i took one in june but the result’s not out yet and taking one in october and probably December. thanks for your advice.

@kagami6918, thank you again for your evaluation. Hmm… yeah i understand you but what if you just take 4.23 as Weighted GPA? will your evaluation vary?

If you want to increase your chance of admission to a very selective school, consider adding a couple of small liberal arts colleges (LACs). These schools are not as well known among International students; they seem to want to attract more of you.

Advantages of LACs:

  • more faculty attention on undergrads (since they generally have few or no graduate students, by definition)
    … smaller average class sizes
… classes/sections taught only by professors in most cases, not by teaching assistants
  • more aid (possibly including merit scholarships) to Internationals (especially compared to state universities)
  • higher rates of admission to graduate and professional schools than most schools on your list

@tk21769, Hmmmm don’t those colleges focus more on pure academics tho?

^ I’m not sure what you mean.
If you are referring to extracurricular activities, fraternities/sororities and sports are big at some LACs but not at others.

I know that a 4.23 as a weighted GPA is good when it’s out of 4, but I’m not sure what it’s like when out of 5. I guess the evaluation would vary though.
