I am in the television station, debate team (most likely captain next year), Writing Club/Poetry Slam, Guidance Honors Association, Secretary of GSA, and manager of African Aid Association (and next year may be accepted into the National Honors Society and World Language Honors Society). I played Softball and Volleyball in Freshman year. My extra-curriculars are my life, and I enjoy them all so much! (I don't do them because they "look good".) I have over 200 volunteer hours so far, and over the summer I am going to debate camp in Boston and I am assistant editing a full-length, professional documentary to enter into film festivals. I am also counting on great recommendations because I have teachers who have already offered them to me. I might be going to France for a week next year to participate in an exchange program my school has. I am career shadowing a retired screenwriter, and I work at the local library as a page. Finally, I took the PSAT and PLAN tests. I am hoping to count on ACTs for my test to send in.

How do I look for Vassar Film? What should I improve? Should I continue Orchestra or insert more APs senior year? How many APs should I take? Should I send both tests (SAT and ACT)? If you have anything else, suggestions-wise, that would be great! Thanks!!!

You don’t ‘get into’ the film department, you just declare the major. Your focus is getting into the school, not any particular program because, once you’re in, you’re free to pursue your interests. As for just getting in, take both tests. I found the SAT way easier than the ACT, but different test takers have different experiences with each exam and it’s better to take both and send in the better score.

Very true…emphasis on better score. However, be cautious. When registering for the ACT and SAT, there’s an option to have the scores sent gratis to a limited number of colleges and your high school. I suggest *to not avail * yourself of the option, especially the high school. Once they have the scores, the GC will most likely include them on your school report/transcript that is sent to your colleges. By supplying them to the high school yourself, they can only report the scores you give them and want reported.

Vassar, as well as Hamilton, Middlebury, et al, will inform the prospective students to send all the scores and allow the college to decide which scores to use–presumably the best. The problem with that approach is once the admissions officers have seem the scores, and assuming the SAT subject tests and/or the SAT are not as impressive as the ACT, or vise versa, the admissions officers have seen the lower, less impressive scores. Admission officers erasing the less than favorable scores from their minds eye isn’t possible. Any more that when a jury hears testimony that a judge subsequently directs them to ignore. Won’t happen.

Once you have the results of both tests, you can decide which scores to send. It will cost a fee to send the scores to each college, but I believe it’s a small price to pay to control the process and dictate which scores are considered for admission.

Lastly, one advantage of taking/submitting the ACT/writing in lieu of the SAT is that the two required SAT subject tests are waived. Many students do not do as well as expected on the SAT subject tests. Of course, many score higher than expected. Have you considered Wesleyan U ? They have a very good film program, and the college has a similar student profile as Vassar. USC also has a great film program.

Good Luck.

Thank you so much! And CrewDad, I am also considering Wesleyan and USC. Thanks again!

How do my grades and extra-curriculars look (aka: everything else besides my tests)? Thanks again!!!
