This year i will be a senior, and Villanova is one of my top choices. With my current SAT scores, do you think i should apply early decision, or wait to improve my scores and do RD. Thanks.

Heres my stats:

Academics:
102 weighted average, 97 unweighted, all honors and ap
sat I: 720 math, 640 cr, 650 writing (a bit weak but am taking it two more times, this is my first) I hope to raise to 740, 670 and 700, respectively
sat IIs: chemistry 750, math 1c 680, will take math 2c and retake 1c
ranked 5/900+
National Honors Society
AP Scholar
AMC participant
Local academic olympics (one student selected to represent school in each subject every year) taken twice and won third prize for ap bio sophomore year.
National Chemistry Olympiad
Bausch and Lomb honorary science award
two years perfect attendance(not really important)
a few other little things here and there, but not too important

Extracurriculars:
Boys volleyball team for three years
1 year of chess club
2 years of environmental club

ecs is where i am weakest, volleyball takes a huge amount of time out of my day, 2+ hours every day, 6 days a week for one out of two terms(4.5 months).

Volunteer/Work experience:

local hospital volunteer for three months until swine flu outbreak when i was no longer allowed bc i was too young
church volunteer
american cancer society fundraiser
newspaper boy for 2 years
Participated in Quality of Life, tried to educate public on alternative energies
numerous clean ups at local parks

So that covers most of it, im pretty weak in ecs, any advice? i know its kinda late now because its senior year. Please help me out and let me know what my shots are thanks!

Villanova does not have an ED (binding) process only EA or RD.
Villanova also does not consider the Writing portion on the SAT.

You look like a strong applicant based on GPA ,class rank and course rigor .You also have fairly strong test scores., apply EA.
You will need to decide on a specific school.

As I’ve stated before ,EA admits are usually reserved for the most competitive applicants , and all students not offered admission are deferred to the RD pool. Many of these deferred are admitted in March. I dont see any reason for NOT applying EA , if you are deffered you can send mid year grades if they bolster your application .

Guessing by your screen name you will apply to A&S as a Chemistry major?
If you apply as undecided in A&S , you will be placed in a Liberal Arts program , notify them of your interest in science to get requisite science courses scheduled for freshman year.

Thanks for the help, I accidentally put ED instead of of EA. I really don’t like the idea of being bound to a school so early on. If I do apply EA and I am not accepted at first, can I still send in my new sat grades after I have been moved to the RD pool? And yes, I want to be a science major, either in chemistry or biology.

The sciences at Villanova are rigorous and comprehensive and you would be a strong applicant.Apply to A&S with a science major, you could always change from chemistry to biology. The head of the BIO department (Dr. Friede) coordinates all health field related graduate school applications if medicine is your ultimate goal.

Mid year grades can be submitted if you are deferred and a DEC 4 SAT score could also be submitted by the Jan 7 application deadline.
[Villanova University: Test Scores](http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/admission/overview/undergrad/documents/testscores.html)
Test Scores
SAT or ACT
All applicants must take the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) tests and have all scores reported directly to the University. Villanova’s SAT code number (2959) or ACT code number (3744) should be entered on the form used to register.
Candidates are asked to submit the scores from each sitting of the SAT. The Admission Committee will review the highest critical reading and highest math scores from the SAT and/or the highest ACT composite from different dates for admission.
For Regular Decision candidates, the SAT and ACT must be taken no later than December of their senior year. For Early Action candidates and Presidential Scholarship nominees, the SAT must be taken no later than October of the senior year and the ACT must be taken no later than September of the senior year. All scores must be received in the Office of University Admission by January 7 for Regular Decision and November 1 for Early Action and Health Affiliation programs.
Villanova requires all applicants to submit the results from the SAT and/or the ACT. Those students who elect to take the ACT must also take the ACT Writing test and have the results submitted to Villanova. The results of the SAT writing portion and ACT writing test will be considered when evaluating an application. However, the SAT critical reading and math or the ACT composite will be used as the primary test indicators.

[Villanova University: Early Action](http://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/admission/overview/undergrad/action.html)
As for EA versus RD this interesting note:
A student who has not applied for Early Action, but has a completed application submitted by the appropriate deadline may be accepted under the provision of Early Action.

Your class rank is certainly eye catching and stands out. Your stats are all very good and I believe the higher Math SAT score in relation to CR for a prospective Science major will be taken into account by AdCom.

Regarding ECs - it was stressed to us at a variety of schools, from Tufts, BC, Cornell, Emory, UVA and Villanova, that quality of involvement in fewer activities is MUCH more meaningful and desirable than minimal involvement in a broader array of ECs. Leadership positions within your ECs are especially valued. The Common App specifically requires you to denote the number of hours you participate in each of your ECs, and you can also highlight the intensity of your commitment to volleyball in one of your essays.

I think you stand a very good chance of admission. Check out old threads - other students got accepted with similar profiles to yours. I would say “excellent chance” of admission except my family found the process so quirky with highly competitive schools that there is no such thing any more as a sure thing.

I agree with Brave Ulysses, apply EA. GOOD LUCK.

My D applied to Villanova last Fall EA with SAT’s and grades nearly identical to yours. She was accepted as a bio major and chose Villanova over BC and BU. She loved her freshman year and raved about her biology advisor. She decided in April, however, that she didn’t want a career in science. Her advisor was very helpful in guiding her she ultimately was able to transfer to the business school this summer.

Bottom line: I agree with the others that you have a very good chance of being admitted and applying EA makes a lot of sense. Best of luck to you.

Thanks a lot everyone, i think i may apply EA, but i am also considering the health affiliation program in medicine. I’m sure this is more competitive, but like EA, if i am not accepted into the program, i am still put on the RD pool, right? just want to be sure, thanks. And does Drexel have a good medical program?

You should try to attend the Science open house or even try to sit in on a class and meet Dr. Friede.

There will be no deny in EA process , only accept or defer.
You are a strong candidate for Villanova admission.
EA will also allow you to be considered for the Presidential Scholarship.

Feel free to contact Dr Friede or Admissions for guidance on your application , if they feel your passion for science it will help your chances.
Best of Luck.

Anything to show interest in the school helps. Did you go on a campus tour? Schedule a meeting with the admissions dept. and speak with someone in the dept. you are interested in. Take a day to sit in on classes. I highly recommend this since you will get a better feel for the academics.

And I forgot. If you ask for less financial aid it helps. They like to have some income to offset everyone who gets in on a scholarship.
