I just found out today that I am waitlisted for JMU, wondering what my chances are. I had a 3.3 non-weighted and 3.7 weighted GPA, 1100 M&CR and 1690 total SATs, and 24 ACT. Good extracurriculars, a few honors courses, but no AP classes. My friend just got in with a 2.8 non-weighted and 3.3 weighted, 1030 M&CR (including 430 on math!) 1660 total SAT, less extracuriculars (but we both played football). He took 2 AP courses and maybe 1 honors class. I would hate to think that the 2 more AP classes are what got him in even though my SATs were better and my grades a lot better. Any other reason why?
Also, with these stats, what are my chances of getting in off the waitlist?

Sorry you got wait listed but actually I am surprised you want to attend JMU since you said your brother hated it so much that he transferred. Good luck, hope it works out.

Ive heard that a lot of JMU decisions are questionable, and a theory has been floating around that they toss applications into the air and pick the ones that land face up. Anyway I'd contact the admissions office about the waitlist.

This year, more than ever, JMU is employing the most nefarious form of admissions statistics management. Students with GPAs in the 2.9-3.2 range are being accepted more frequently than those in the 3.4-3.7 range. It's transparent as to why.

Since UVA dropped Early Decision, JMU does not want to accept any applicant whom it thinks is likely headed to Charlottesville or perhaps Blacksburg. These students are being waitlisted in droves. Once UVA passes judgment on April 1st, JMU might accept them.

I know of a student who was waitlisted at JMU, but accepted at VTech, Wake Forest, and several other more prestigious colleges. Come on JMU, do the right thing!

exactly- i know many people, including myself, who have been flat out rejected with 3.5+ and 1200 SAT's...

I know of many students whose stats are excellent enough for UVA who have been admitted to JMU. Students with GPAs between 3.4 and 3.7 are not good candidates for UVA. I do not know why any student with a GPA of 2.9 to 3.2 is being admitted to JMU unless they are an athelete maybe? JMU does look at the number of AP courses a students takes as an important factor in admissions not just GPA and SAT scores. I think the entire college admissions process should be made more transparent so students know exactly what it takes to be admitted ahead of time.

Are some of those 2.9-3.2 admits from another state (different grading system than VA), or are some those admits from a more rural part of VA?

JMU must constantly manage and pursue decreasing its admittance rate and increasing its yield to justify its rankings. Also, it must seek to keep the female/male ratio from reaching 65%. Therefore, it must sniff out those applicants who are not likely to attend and favor males over females.

Thus, better to reject a 3.6 female and admit a 3.0 male. Accordingly, a female from Northern Virginia will find at a statisical disadvantage for admissions versus a male applicant from Abnova*.

*Anywhere but northern virginia.

unbelieveable ..... but what you say Jonathan T makes a lot of sense...... but it's certainly unfair.................

I wouldn't be too concerned about waitlist for JMU. I live near and everyone applies for it as a safety school (including me) but no one every really goes there. There are going to be so many people turning JMU down that I truly believe they will be taking a harder look at their waitlist and admitting more students. The campus is growing extremely fast and they are accepting more and more students each year.

we are both from pittsburgh, PA

I just got wait-listed from JMU. Kinda bummed me out. I am freshman transfer student. I didn't have great high school grades with a 2.8 GPA from a hard high school and 1180 SAT. My first semester at college I got a 3.94 GPA and made deans list. I got in accepted to Virginia Tech about week ago which was before the report date, thats what confused me. I thought it would be the other way around; into jmu and waitlisted at tech. I am in-state student and wondering if anyone else was in my position as well, and chances of getting in after the waitlist. I want to send in a recommendation from teacher now, or do what ever I can to get in. Hopefully I get in after I send in the end of year grades.
What gives JMU?

I have like a 3.3-3.4 with 1300 SAT MC and R and i got waitlisted too... im pretty much accepting the fact that i most likely wont get in. So ill be going to udel instead...

Wow techboid, sorry to hear that you didn't get in. May I ask if you are from northern Va?

let me just put this out there: if you live in VA, JMU seems really hard to get into. but if you're out of state, it's easy!

everyone from VA is saying how they're waitlisted/rejected with amazing stats...i got into with a 3.2 GPA and a 1200/1600 or 1800/2400 SAT. i did have all honors classes & one AP, with lots of EC's. i live in PA and all of my friends got into JMU and none of us are really that outstanding in school. however, my one friend got into virginia tech but not JMU?

I got into JMU EARLY!
with a 3.65..and a 26 ACT..****ty SATs
I live in Charlottesville and I'm in the Governor's School and my mother graduated from JMU so that helps

I just wanted to bring some information to light, so that it could help you understand the context of JMU's admissions. (I am no expert, but I think it is beneficial to know the following)

It is true that it is getting more difficult to get into JMU. This may be because the quality of students across the board is getting more impressive and the competitiveness has led to great students not getting into JMU. We must also understand that JMU is undergoing expansion.

This is visibly seen from the construction of the underground tunnel/bridge and the addition of new buildings. JMU has also been purchasing a large amount of property in the area around campus (mostly quad-area). They have also build new dorms on the ISAT part of campus, as well as build a new library outfitted with a dining center.

JMU has also decided to upgraded the JMU football stadium (Perhaps push to go D1) and has made plans to make more additions (More sports fields, and a high-rise dorm building off campus).

With this in mind, it is most likely that JMU will begin taking in more and more kids in the upcoming years (If not this year).

I wasn't sure if the people here knew that, since I did not see much national coverage regarding this, and I have been hearing alot of this on-campus.

Anyways, good luck with the wait-list, and I hope for the best.

^^This is what my son pretty much has told me too.

Has anyone gotton off of JMU's waitlist for Fall 2008? Or, know of anyone who has?

Is the fact that no one has responded mean that the waitlist is not active??
