Chances for WashU

I've just started looking into WashU, and I'm thinking it might be a good fit for me. My cousin recently graduated, so I've been able to talk to her about it. Can you look at my stats and chance me, or tell me what i should improve? Also, if you think I could get any merit-based scholarships (as we don't qualify for need-based)? Thanks!

Looks excellent to me…better than most of my stuff (although I had one point higher on the ACT, as if that actually matters).
I think you have a great chance of getting in, although I don’t know about merit-based scholarships. When I applied, it appeared to me that most were based on specific fields (such as the biology scholarship for those who had done some sort of biological research in high school), although I could be completely wrong (and if I am then I’m pretty mad that I didn’t apply for them!).
Also…maybe I am missing something, but how is your school not very competitive if you are only ranked 8-14 with a perfect GPA?

Regardless of your chances, you should still apply to merit scholarships since they could help not only if you earn one, but even if you just apply since it shows interest. Get someone to nominate you for the Danforth, and apply for the Ervin and Rodriguez scholarships. Those are open to everyone!

Thanks for replying Albo and acolombianp28! Your input is really helpful.

As for my school not being super-competitive, the main thing that brought my rank down is the fact that I took orchestra for the first two years of high school. As it’s a general level class, it counted for less and took up the space I could have had for honors classes.

Also, my high school has about 2400 students, and football is the main focus over academics. That was my main reasoning for stating it as not very competitive, but I could be wrong. Sorry if I am!

Update: For my subject tests, I got 800 USH and 800 Lit. Hooray!

Nice job. You have set yourself up really well for college admissions. Admission is very likely if you apply ED. Everything seems to be right in place - great gpa, rank, test scores, activites, etc. so as long as you write a decent essay you should be in ED. I would definitely recommend applying ED if you really want to go to WashU. I did, and it’s so nice to know exactly where you’re going while others still have the stress associated with waiting until April for their final decisions. For RD, you have a great chance, but remember the RD round is much less predictable as it is more competitive.

Merit scholarships are extremely tough to get, so it’s impossible to say whether or not you have a good chance at getting them without viewing the whole application. The best I can say is that you are a very qualified student who would definitely get consideration, so apply for them. It can’t hurt.

Good luck and congrats on your SAT II scores.

When do you plan on sleeping?

In my creative writing class? Haha. As for my schedule the only two I’m worried about are calc and bio, the others shouldn’t be too much of a problem for me. And hopefully I can balance my ECs well enough. Do you really think it’s going to be too much?

Everytime someone posts a chances on here it makes me feel like an underachiever. I was just a normal member (one meeting a month) of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (math), and Science Honor Society, each of which had like 100 members at my school. My ECs are about as average and boring as they come.

asha.papillon – your chances seem pretty good, but I would still say that it’s a slight reach because it’s so competitive. If your essays and recs go well, you will have a really good shot.

albo – from your post, I hope I am correct in assuming that you are a student at WashU. It’s refreshing to know that you don’t have to be an extreme overachiever to get into a top school.

Albo - Everytime someone posts a chances on here, it makes me feel like I’m never going to get into WashU. I’m afraid to apply ED because I also really, really, really like American and GW…

I’m sorry if posting this thread has made people upset. But really, I don’t think of myself as too much of an overachiever. Yeah, I do a bunch of activities, but I’m not in any of them just for college. They are all important to me. Isn’t that what colleges are supposed to want, anyways?

I don’t think it really made anyone upset, I have seen lots of people posting tons of extracurriculars and stuff like that, and I know people who have similar activities to you. But, I got in just fine to Wash U with my 3 ECs if anyone is nervous, I think they are really looking for some diversity (not everyone can do everything).
I actually haven’t done much special (I was probably average to slightly above average on GPA/ACT type things and pretty low on the extracurricular side), but I guess I wrote a decent essay and did some quality community service as well as a decent interview, and it almost seemed like they were begging me to come (Wash U paid for me to be flown to the school and stay in a dorm with a student one weekend before I even applied), which was good because it was my first choice anyway.

Also, its good to know you like what you are doing. I think that helped when I did my interview, because I think I got across that I enjoyed my community service pretty well and the interviewer seemed impressed/happy that I enjoyed it (I worked for a city camp and a group that planned activities in my city for teenagers/kids).
