Chances for Wharton ED and some other business schools? Thanks!

Female Asian, rising senior

GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.17 W

CLASS RANK: school doesn’t rank

SAT: M 800, W 720, CR 680 (2200 total)

(taking one more time in Oct)

SAT II:
Math II 800
Physics 700

(taking physics again in Nov)

COURSES:
The school I went to during freshman and sophomore year didn’t offer any honors or APs, so obviously I didn’t take any. Then I transferred junior year and I had 3 honors and 1 AP junior year.

Senior classes include 4 APs (economics, physics, English, and calculus AB) and 1 honor class.

AWARDS:
• 2nd place in city-wide speech competition
• Valedictorian at 9 grade graduation (I went to a school in Canada, so ninth grade = end of middle school, tenth grade = start of high school)
• School’s “Citizen of the Year” award (given to one person each year who best represents good citizenship)
• Commended for National Merit (don’t know if I’m a semi-finalist or not yet)

EXTRA CURRICULARS:
• President of a clothing donation fund
• Volunteering to tutor and play with kids (45 hours, I know it’s not a lot, so I don’t know if it’ll help or not)
• Founded organization that raises money for local community centers
• Legal intern during the summer, 42 hours a week for 2 months
• Voice lessons (11, 12)
• Choir (9, 10)
• Model UN (11, 12)
• Yearbook editor (12)
• Peer Tutors (tutoring other kids of the student body) (11, 12)
• Debate Team (9, 10)
• Dance team (will this even help me?) (9, 10, 11, 12)

SCHOOLS:
• UPenn (Wharton) ED
• NYU (Stern)
• WashU in St. Louis
• University of Michigan (Ross)
• Carnegie Mellon (Tepper)
• Emory (Goizuetta)
• Boston College
• Babson
• UVA
• MIT (Sloan)

Since I transferred schools, colleges won’t be seeing the profile of my school from freshman and sophomore year. What can I do to help explain my really easy course load during those two years?

I know that a lot of these will probably be reaches, so besides chances on the schools listed, if anyone wants to give me recommendations on good matches/safeties, I’m definitely open to that as well.

Thank you!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention this, but I'm OOS for all of these.

I think you have a great chance for all those schools. For MIT, do you apply to the business school directly, or do you just apply to MIT and then you enter the b-school once you start? Just don't forget for Michigan, it's a 3 year so you'd have to do preferred admissions as a senior, or just wait until freshman year to apply. I think you could be considered competitive for Wharton, but it's an Ivy so who knows! Best of luck! (I'm applying to some of the same b-schools too, so I'm feeling kind of anxious too!)

You have to talk to your current guidance counselor to work out the easy schedule.

• UPenn (Wharton) ED - reach (lack of business-related ECs kinda hurts)
• NYU (Stern) - match/low reach
• WashU in St. Louis - (olin school?) - low reach/high match
• University of Michigan (Ross) - not familiar
• Carnegie Mellon (Tepper) - match
• Emory (Goizuetta) - match
• Boston College - match
• Babson - not familiar
• UVA - match
• MIT (Sloan) - high reach

I think you need a safety.

I applied to Babson and MIT. I can guarantee that you'll get accepted at Babson, and you have a pretty standard (so very low) chance at MIT.

Might I ask why you're considering Babson, but not Bentley?

Thanks guys!

@ Ummy: At MIT, you would just apply to MIT & then enter Sloan once you're accepted. & Yep, I know about the 3 year program. Thanks for your opinion! Wharton probably gets a lot of highly qualified students, so yeah.. who knows! Good luck with your application process too. Hopefully we'll both get admitted to where we want to go!

@ Azngod: Yeah, you're right. I'll probably email my GC tonight to see what he recommends. & Yeah, I wish I had more business-related ECs. I feel like my ECs seem pretty standard, but I guess there's not much I can do about that now. Thanks for your chances though.

@ TUOwls: I'm probably going to apply to IU (Kelley) & Purdue for safeties. Do you think these would be reasonable safeties for me?

@ Arnoc: Yeah, MIT will probably be quite hard for me to get into. My high school limits us to 10 colleges, so I'm not sure if it'd be even worth it to try for MIT.
And to be honest, I haven't really heard much about Bentley until now. My GC recommended that I look into Babson, so that's why I researched it. I see that Bentley is also in the Boston area though, so I'll probably visit it when I'm in Boston next month. Do you think that Bentley would be better for me than Babson?

Babson - IN

Those would definitely be good safeties for you.

@ 20091990: Thanks for the reassurance. haha.

@ TUOwls: Good to know. :)

I applied to many of these schools and have a good idea. First of all 'lack of business-related ECs WILL NOT hurt you' at Wharton at all. that is just a myth. Secondly, those are not "safeties" for you. However, I think your main weaknesses are you EC's. You don't have enough leadership positions. As far as explaining about your freshman and sophomore year courses is concerned, just tell them the truth in additional information in your app. As of now:

MIT - High reach - reject
UPenn Wharton - High reach - reject
NYU Stern - reach - 50/50
WUSTL - low reach - waitlist
Emory - High match - 50/50
CM - High Match - probably in
BC- donno
Babson - probably in
UVA -probably in

@Moizuhk: Are you talking about the schools on the list or IU/Purdue not being safeties for me? I completely understand why the schools on the list aren't safeties, but I feel like IU/Purdue would be good safeties.

I'm definitely going to try to get more leadership positions next year, as some of the activities that I'm involved with haven't voted for the leaders yet. It's harder for me to get leadership positions though, since I've only been involved in the clubs for a year, being a new junior transfer. It's not an excuse, of course, but in the activities where long term commitment is prioritized, you can understand how it's more difficult for me? I will definitely try to get more leadership opportunites though. Are there any other ways to increase my chances besides that though?

any other opinions?

its lookin good for wharton. there's definitely chances. need more business ECs. Could you chance me because I'm also looking at Wharton. Thanks!

"Do you think that Bentley would be better for me than Babson?"

If you're interested in Accounting or Finance, absolutely. If you're interested in Entrepreneurship, absolutely not. I chose Bentley over Babson and Northeastern.

@ Arnoc: Finance is the area I want to go into. I will definitely look into Bentley some more. How do you like your experience at Bentley so far? Any pros/cons?

Also, does anyone think that being a legal intern could be counted as a business-related EC? I know it's more law than business, but the sorts of law that I'm working with deal with business contracts and financial collections. More coporate law I guess. Should I play this up in my application?

"How do you like your experience at Bentley so far? Any pros/cons?"

I'm an entering freshman, but I've spent time on campus and have gone through orientation (11:00 am day 1, leave at 4:30 pm day 3, and never have a moment to spare). I absolutely loved every second of it. The campus is fantastic, the staff are great, and the community is very welcoming. It's hard not to be in a good mood there.

You may or may not care about the housing. Freshman dorms aren't anything special: one room, communal bathrooms per floor per gender (guys live on one side, girls on the other). It gets so much better afterward, though. Typically you'll live in a suite sophomore and junior years (own bathroom!), and an apartment senior year.

@moizuhk
wow....seriously????? Have you seen the 4.0 and the 2200??? NYU stern 50/50? Nyu Stern's 75 percentile for GPA is a 3.65 I'm pretty sure that warrants at least a high match.

@op
Wharton has a huge emphasis on math and the SAT II scores are nice and I do see some leadership positions in there. However do you have any awards??? regional's don't really count all that much, state/national/international probably are the best.

MIT - (reach) instead of a high reach due to MIT being more grade oriented than the rest of your titan list.
UPenn Wharton - (High reach) Yeah it's a high reach for everyone.
NYU Stern - high match Stats way above 75 percentile
WUSTL - Washu has a relatively new b-school (Olin) and it does not really have an alumni network, their working on it, but it's practicaly nonexistant. So i will not recommend going to washu for business. however (low match)
Emory - Gonzalez is a great school, however like Olin it has a smaller alumni network due to the b-schools small size. Consider it seriously before applying
CM - Match- get in while you can, Tepper is on the rise as one of the best B-schools in the US.
BC-uh are you applying to Caroll?? no offense but I don't think BU Caroll is even ranked......... I could be wrong..... (high match)
Babson - high match - your like 99 percentile lol.
UVA - if your oos good luck UVA is like 79% in state so the OOS positions are extremely competitive. (low reach)

@Fuzzylogic: Nope, I really lack in awards. :( I wish I had done more my first 3 years of high school, but it's too late to regret anything now I guess.

I always thought MIT was more personality/character orientated. I'm not sure if I'm applying there yet or not because I don't really think I have a decent chance?

WashU (Olin) is ranked at 15 for undergrad business programs by USNews, if that matters at all. Idk, WashU & Emory are the two schools that I really fell in love with from their pamphlets (no chance to visit them yet). :/

I'd be really happy going to Stern, but do you think it'd be more competitive to get into Stern vs the other NYU schools? I know that I'm somewhat of a match for NYU in general, but I"m not sure how I would do against the pool of applicants for Stern.

Yep, BC Caroll. It's ranked at 27 for undergrads business. I'm visiting a lot of Boston schools in a month, so whether I apply there or not will also depend on my visit. (:

I wish I was instate for some good public school! That would make me a lot more confident about the college process, haha. No such luck, however.

wow probably one of the most thoughtful replies I ever got lol!
Ahh MIT? apparently MIT is less holistically graded than the other IVies and Tier 0 and 1 schools.. A MIt admissions officer once told me that... so take it as you wish.

If you are in love with Washu and Emory, APPLY!!!! Don't let others stop you from applying, however truly take into account alumni connections when choosing schools.

Stern overall is more competitive then say Tisch (which requires a portfolio or audition btw), however Stern likes to keep it's yield up more than other schools and will more likely accept different types of people ex. high GPa low scores. high stats no ec's etc...

Wow BC caroll ranked...... amazing.... haha well go for it!!!

And yeah UVA is gonna be hard OOS

One VERY importnant thing, do not let me or anyone else on this site make your choices for you, apply to schools that best fit your personality and don't worry about it too much, it'll give you ulcers.. lol
GOOD LUCK!
