Chances for Wharton/UPenn?

Hi I’m a 11th grader and I’m just wondering what I should do over the next year to maybe build up my resume and apply to Wharton and their M&T double major program, which I believe I’ll be applying ED to, but if anyone has suggestions for backup schools that would be great too :))

Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian American/Chinese (first-generation immigrant, but born in US)
Competitive public school, pretty good ranking-wise
I’m also a PA native, but would that help with applying to a Penn school?
Legacy: Cousin went to Wharton, but not sure if that would help on application…

STATS:
GPA UW: 3.84
GPA W: 4.67

Classes taken:
APUSH, AP Physics, AP Computer Science, AP Calculus I and II, AP Microeconomics, AP statistics, AP Literature, rest are honors

Class rank: Not sure but definitely top 10%

SAT: 1540
SAT Subject:
Math II: 760
Physics: 720
ACT: 34

ECS:

Won a lot of national poetry awards and had my poems published in a few famous poetry magazines

Violinist in Philly Youth Orchestra, also part of local orchestra

Class treasurer 3 years in a row, created a fundraiser for our yearly class field trip

Vice pres of Math Club and Future Business Leaders of America

Co-founded a summer camp with my older sister to teach young girls in the area STEM

Started a weekly township class as well teaching elementary schoolers coding/robotics in the fall (kind of a continuation on the summer camp)

Varsity field hockey midfielder , also on a travel team (won a regional competition) , coaches township Field Hockey program

Kickboxing, won a few youth competitions, but also work at my training place once a week and teach kid classes

NHS and Keys Club, National Merit Scholar

I have more EC’s but these are all that I really think are important…do you think I have a good chance especially applying ED? I know the M&T program is extremely selective but I understand that even if I don’t get in M&T I can still apply to Wharton. Do you think that my resume is business centered enough, or that I have enough leadership positions etc? I mean I still have a little less than a year to add more to it, but I want to know where I stand right now. If you have any questions feel free to ask! :stuck_out_tongue:

How can you be both an immigrant and be born in the US? I’m confused.

@mxrxsxa she probably means that she was the first generation born in the U.S., with her parents being the immigrants born in another country.

M&T is really for applicants who have business and technology experience, like creating an app, writing software for a company, running a startup, etc. You have pretty good leadership positions but understand it is perhaps the most competitive program to get into in the country. Write good essays

@HGNA125 Your GPA is slightly below the Penn average (usually around 3.91-3.94 in most recent years) but your SAT is slightly above the Penn average (~1510). Your subject tests are a bit low. Penn does not consider cousins as legacies so no it won’t help. Your ECs are solid.

The Penn M&T program is a dual degree program offered jointly by Penn SEAS and Wharton so you need to show both an interest and ideally some background in both engineering and business. Also it is arguably one of the hardest programs to get into in the country. Yes you can apply to M&T and designate Wharton as your fallback. If you get rejected from M&T your application will then be considered for admission to Wharton.

get your Math subject test up to an 800. Further your leadership in Student Gov. Run for class president. Y

@hgna125

PA native – no advantage, but if you’re at a Philly school then yes.
Cousin – no advantage

Have you heard of KWH? Looking at your poetry accomplishments, I think this may be useful to you! http://writing.upenn.edu/wh/highlights/prospective.php

Go for it ! And best of luck
