You have a great chance of getting in even though you're from out of state. As long as you write good esays I don't see why you wouldn't have a great shot.

Doesn't UVa still require SATII writing...which, since it doesn't exist anymore - I guess you'll have to take the new SATI?

I'm taking the new SAT in the fall that has the writing component.

You are one of the first out of staters(besides me!) who i would say has very good chances. Class rank and SATs are very impressive, good luck!

I think you have a great shot. I hope you will choose to be a cavalier next year.

The admissions committee is gonna be impressed, esp. by your leadership experience ad ecs. Good luck!

I think your best stat is that #1 ranking. My school however had several 1500+ SAT dudes rejected out of state. Can't count on anything.

As long as your parents are willing to pay OOS rates, and with those stats, you're in. Don't worry about your lack of ethnicity, diversity doesn't seem to be a big issue here. You're their target recruit.

my daughter was waitlisted as an out of state applicant. she scored 1480 on the sat1 and she scored 750 or better on her 3 sat2 tests. she was very near the top of her class, she took 7 ap classes and she was a national merit finalist. i could go on but i assume you get the picture. uva is suprisingly competitive for out of state applicants.

First of all, like I said before, ChunRich, you have a great shot. Second of all, despite what spyderman says, there is financial aid at UVa - so you may not need to pay the full amount of OOS rates - see the AccessUVa thread.

Third, spyderman, where are you getting your information about diversity. "Don't worry about your lack of ethnicity, diversity doesn't seem to be a big issue here."? Have you ever actually been on campus?

From the UVa website:

<a href="http://www.virginia.edu/Facts/Glance_Enrollment.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.virginia.edu/Facts/Glance_Enrollment.htm</a></p>

8.8 percent - African American
10.9 percent - Asian American
2.9 percent - Hispanic American
0.3 percent - Native American
4.5 percent - International

Compare that with the nation's ethnic makeup (from census.gov)

African American - 11.4 percent
Native American - 0.8 percent
Asian American - 3.7 percent
Hispanic American - 11 percent

Although we still need to work on attracting more African American, Hispanic American, and Native American students, I don't think when nearly 23 percent of your school is classified as a minority you fall into the category of lacking diversity.

Lastly, you are right, ChunRich is the type of student we want - in that we want smart, articulate, well-rounded individuals.

Also, to read up about diversity at UVa, check out this site:

<a href="http://www.virginia.edu/uvadiversity/%5B/url%5D">http://www.virginia.edu/uvadiversity/</a></p>

Although I agree it is very hard for OOS (I knew people who got into even Princeton and Stanford - but rejected from UVa), I think ChunRich has a really good shot. Anyways, what is the harm - the $50 some dollar application fee is really not that much in the long run.

Plus, comparing our diversity to Princeton's, there is not that much difference:

Princeton (from Princeton.edu)

8 % African American
6 % Hispanic American
0.7 % Native American
13 % Asian American

VirginiaAlum, I'm here almost every day. BTW, you forgot low-income students as well.
