Chances for William and Mary instate

3.5/4.1 GPA, national merit semifinalist, hoping for a 34 on my ACT, 1700 hours of community service, top 5 percent in community service in the state, DECA national qualifier, DECA vice president of local chapter, FBLA national qualifier, FBLA vice president, member f Kansas city youth symphony, president of school orchestra, all state and all district orchestra. 1s at state solo an ensemble festival, variety tennis, hopefully captain of tennis team. Also NHS member, but honestly everyone Gets into NHS. Owner of a startup business, what are my chances at William and Mary as a instate student? Also what can I do to improve my chances of getting in? I'm looking to major in either INdustrial engineering, or finance/accounting.

[William & Mary - Combined Degrees: Engineering](http://www.wm.edu/as/undergraduate/curriculum/special/engineering/index.php)

There are no engineering majors at W & M - they offer cooperative 3:2 and 4:6-year programs with RPI and Columbia. If engineering is definitely in your future, I’d suggest looking at UVA and VT instead. W & M’s accounting major is considered quite strong (highly ranked in various national assessments).

What is the track record for students from your high school in W & M admissions? Your GC should have a very good idea of how students with your stats and background usually fare. To anyone who’d like to improve their chances of getting in, I suggest writing the best essay you can, and doing the optional submission as well. If you’d interview well, try to schedule an on-campus interview this summer. Slots are limited, and scheduling began on May 1st. [William & Mary - On-Campus Interviews](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/applicationprocess/oncampusinterviews/index.php)

Thank a great idea! Thank you do much! But how does the dual degree work at William an Mary? Would I go three years at Columbia, and then go two years at William and Mary?

With the 3:2 program you spend your first 3 years at W&M and then 2 years at Columbia or RPI. There’s also a 4:2 program (4 years at W&M and 2 at Columbia or RPI). In the 3:2 program you get to bachelor’s degrees. With the 4:2 program you get a BS and a master’s in engineering.

That sounds great! How competitive is it to get into to?

That’s hard to say. There’s no real application for the 3:2 program on W&M’s end (that’s really an advising program…not an actual major) but you do have to apply to the other schools when done and it’s up to them whether or not to admit you. Might be best to contact the program’s advisor for more information on applying to Columbia and RPI at the conclusion of the program.

So you have to get into Columbia to do the program? Also do you know how tough this program is?

You don’t have to but the goal of the 3:2 or 4:2 program is to have you spend two years at either Columbia or RPI to get your engineering degree. You can certainly decide not to pursue the transfer once you start.

So your basically getting an ivy league education and an exceptional liberal arts education

Also anything I can do to improve my chances of acceptance? Overall how’s William and Mary’s sorroundings?

We’d refer you to our Admit It! Blog which details our process and the types of qualities we look for in applicants. Is your second question about our locality?

Could you post a link for that? And yes the locality of william and Mary

It’s blogs.wm.edu/author/admiss. The blog has numerous posts on each component we evaluate and our process as a whole.

Williamsburg is a smaller suburban city located midway between Richmond and Virginia Beach in the southeastern portion of the state. We’re also about 2.5 hours from DC. It’s known primarily for two tourist attactions, Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens theme park. We’ll let current students/alumni/other posters provide you their perspective on living and learning in the “the 'burg.”

That would be great! Thanks for all your help! Could you also chance me?

We actually don’t respond to chance me threads (see our top-level post in this forum). Our process isn’t such that we can “chance” people without being able to review their entire application. Check out our Chance Me blog post ([W&M Blogs Chance Me](http://blogs.wm.edu/2010/12/14/chance-me/)) on this very topic.

Ok that’s fine!

Bump bump bump
