I visited both UVA and William and Mary and both look amazing in their own way. But since UVA ended EA im having a tough time figuring out if I should apply early to William and Mary next year to improve my chances. I am a male in-state Asian. I go to a public school that is ranked in the top 50 in the nation. This may be also why my gpa is kind of low.

GPA: 3.71 out of a 4.0 scale
SATS: 1280?pretty miserable but I should improve next second time
No class ranks
ACT: I plan on taking the ACT?s (good idea?)
APs : im taking 4 APs this year (stat, calc, us history, lang. and comp) and 4 next year as a senior, and should probably pass all the AP tests

Extra curricular:
4 years football, 3 years varsity, lettered
Coach of youth soccer team
Started a math tutoring club in soph. year
NHS, Junior Civitan 2 years, Key Club 3 years, Indian Club 4 years
Relay for life team captain
Model UN, have won awards

Is that GPA weighted or unweighted? If it's unweighted and you can bring the SAT score up to 1350ish/2000ish you will probably get into both W&M and UVA.

its think its weighted with . 5 added for APs,
ive taken all honors classes also, but the school doesnt add anything for them
i am pretty sure i will improve to 1350+ on the next SATS

I'm curious if you go to one of the Governor's Schools? I have a friend who goes to Maggie Walker, and she had a similar GPA (with slightly higher SATs, I think), and she got into both, probably easily.

instint23, you are on the football team at your high school, and relatively few Asian guys are on the football team. I'd say improve the SAT's by 100 points (M and CR) and then you have a good shot.

get your SAT's up. do you live in state? b/c out of state is ridiculously hard....i got denied and cried for like 2 days. william and mary was my dream school. and i got 1340SAT, 32ACT, 4.5W, varsity tennis team 3 yrs, APs and honors, president of honor society, more extra currics...crap loads of volunteer work (i was also captain for relay for life).

you have the asian+guy+instate+football thing going on, which i think were factors that helped me get in. Being a guy is a plus b/c they want to keep the gender ratios about 50/50. For what it's worth, I EDed with a lower GPA and fewer # of APs than you. I also took SAT IIs, but apparently they were virtually useless and I suspect WAM didnt even look at them.

You might get in with those stats but I'd suggest raising the GPA to close to a 4.0 and 1350 for SAT. A friend of mine for class of 2010 got deferred then rejected had a similar gpa and a 1310 SAT.

From what it appears and the state will refute it but it DOES appear only so many kids from a state school are admitted to W&M and UVA. Therefore if a large number of students with greater test results, GPA, EC's, possibly a nod in the No direction.

We had my son's academic awards banquet Wednesday, and only he and one girl were listed as going to W&M. There were about 100 kids at the banquet (his class is about 500), and there were at least 15 going to UVA, and about 25 going to VT.

Maybe UVA gave his school some extra slots, there are not a lot of kids from this part of Virgina who go to UVA (comparatively speaking). We live in the Norfolk region.

I was flabbergasted that there were so many going to UVA. Last year, my older son graduated and there were only 4 from his class that went to UVA.

As usual though, hardly anyone from Tidewater goes to W&M. It was the same way in my day. I was the only one from my school.

I don't understand why hardly anyone from the Norfolk-Va Beach area goes to W&M, especially since it is so close by.

I think that's it, namtrag.....it's so close!!!!! Surprised 15 going to UVA....my granddaughter is an excellent student at the Beach, but didn't get into UVA. Only thing we can figure is so many kids from her school DID get in. And her dad a UVA grad.

My S liked that it was that close. Too far to commute, but he can come home real easily on the weekends if he wants to.

I think one reason is it doesn't have an engineering school, another is that it has a reputation of being extremely hard to get into, so not many apply. In fact, the acceptance rate is about the same as UVA's.
