chances for yale

<p>I'm still not sure of whether I want to apply SCEA or regular decision. All opinions are greatly appreciated.</p>

<p>Personal: class of '08 (high school), white, male, I go to a competitive private high school in FL that sends kids to Ivies pretty much every yr.</p>

<p>Stats:</p>

<p>Ranking: school does not rank, but estimated betweeen 3 and 5</p>

<p>GPA: 4.0 uw not sure of weighted</p>

<p>PSAT- 216
-I think this is the semifinalist cutoff, so hopefully I will be NMS</p>

<p>SAT: 2230 (math 750, R-730, W-750)</p>

<p>SAT 2: us history-740, bio m-730, math 2-720</p>

<p>AP-
Biology-5
Latin:Vergil-5
US History-5
English Lang/Comp-5</p>

<p>Course load: the most rigorous that my school offers; will have 9 APs by end of senior yr. Most other courses are honors</p>

-National Foreign Language Honor Society
-07 ISEF finalist- completed a project for next yr that will also prob. go to ISEF based on comments from local fair judges
-piano, mainly as a hobby; a few local awards won
-have won awards at local math, science, and latin competitions
-awards for performance on Nat'l Latin Exam
-have held various positions in school's latin club
-involved in a club that visits and plays with local under privileged children
-member of school's honor council
-1 yr jv soccer
-1 yr jv tennis, 1 yr varsity tennis
-1 yr jv cross country, 3 yrs varsity cross country (2 yr capt. and mvp)
-2 yr varsity track</p>

<p>Volunteering- approx. 350 hrs
-Vacation Bible School @ church
-2 church mission trips
-local library
-summer camp for mentally and physically handicapped children
-local golf tournament</p>

-Essay: have not written yet
-Recs: should be pretty good</p>

<p>quite doubtful. Average scores for yale. good gpa/rank, but no substantial ECs actually poor ECs. I don't see you standing out, unless there is something I dont see.</p>

<p>Thanks for the reply. I knew my scores were in the low/average range, but I thought my ECs were decent. Does ISEF not count for anything?</p>

<p>Science is what stands out the most for. Try any way possible to show your passion for science. ISEF Finalist is a pretty big deal.</p>

<p>don't let anyone tell you that your chances are doubtful! ok a lot of people have this impression that you have to be a rich legacy/heartstring case/URM/nobel prize winner to get into a school like yale. this is NOT true. first of all, even if you are "average" for a pool like yale's, a huge proportion of admitted students were "average"...obviously, there aren't 1800 super-special cases in yale's pool every year...they HAVE to admit some "normal" kids. also, ISEF finalist is a pretty big deal...i wouldn't know for sure, but i'd imagine that would make you stand out! you have as good a chance as anyone...good luck!</p>
