Chances from NJ

Hey whats up, I've finished my application to UCSB and will send it asap. I'm from northern NJ and I know out-of-state admissions are tough, and I saw on UCSB's site they only have 4% OOS students. I visited the campus when I was in CA visiting a cousin, and the campus and feel of the school are awesome, definitely one of my first choices. Can you give me your honest opinions on what my chances are? Also, I know that UCSB's a science-geared school but I'm going to major in History, alt major International Relations (pre-law).

SATs: 2060 (730 CR, 610 M, 720 W)

SAT IIs: World History 770, Literature 660

AP US History: 5

GPA: 90/100 UW (no weighted GPA), ranked 122 of 697

Wrote what's been called a standout essay by everyone I've shown it to (by people at Princeton and a former admissions rep from Yale)

I wish the UC schools allowed recs...

ECs and awards:

National Honor Society
Boys State (won Public Advocate)
Captain, CHS Swimming 11-12
All-County and All-League Honors in swimming, 4-yr Varsity letterwinner
Keystone Club President, VP, Sergeant-at-Arms
350 plus volunteer hrs
Boys and Girls Club of my town's Boy of the Year award
Naval Academy Summer Seminar, Most Outstanding Candidate

My own production company (I produce and DJ and am a recognized artist). One of the big reasons I want to go to UCSB is the music scene that goes on around IV... I'm looking at academics first though!!

Worked as a counselor, maintenance, lifeguard, and food preparer/server at a local bagel joint.

Music's my passion and I conveyed that in my essays. What do you think?

I don’t know if a UC GPA applies to me as I’m OOS but I calculated it and it’s a 3.75

Seems like a good chance for you. Just so you’re aware, going to UCSB out of state will easily cost you more than $200,000 for four years. Is that worth it to you? To me it’s ludicrous. UCSB was my dream school but opted for another school that costs considerable less. Same education, half of the cost.
