chances from OOS after ACT update

Stats:
demographics:
*I am an Asian Indian Male (most likely won't help)

IN SUMMARY: I should finish high school with around a 3.85, or at very worst 3.8 UW for fresh-senior year.
*I know however that stanford, UCs, and Umich weight grades differently, so this number should go down slightly for these schools

*class rank UW right now = 38/515. Weighted = 30/515 (will go up because not many kids have taken hard classes yet)

*Want to major in either Biomedical Engineering, Economics, Math, Physics, but then go on to med school.

What school should I apply to to have the best chance (if any)?

UCLA: slight reach (OOS)

california_love8:

UCLA: Slight Reach (out of state, Engineering)

what if I forget engineering and just go with a major in Bio or Physics? Will that improve my chances at all then?

Yes.

After getting accepted to the university as a non-engineering school major, you can ask to apply to the College of Engineering and they will decide if you should be admitted had you originally applied to the engineering program using your high school record and achievements and whatnot. If you do not get accepted that time around, you can continue to do some of your intended engineering major's requirements (chemistry courses, calculus, physics, labs, etc.) and re-apply after completing some combination of 2 courses from chem/physics/math. (This is off the top of my head and so if anyone wants to correct me about the minimum requirements to re-apply as an engineer major, feel free. :)) The point remains the same however. At any rate, if you do not get in that time around, you can continue the courses in your intended engineering major and re-apply as many times as you are rejected. They will evaluate you on an individual basis based upon your grades in your intended engineering major and also by your essay demonstrating why you want to be an engineering major. Grade trends are important and from what I recall, there is no GPA cut-off but it is suggested that you earn A's/B's in your courses.

When making your decision, you would need to consider whether getting into UCLA (possibly NOT as an engineering major) outweighs the possibilities of being guaranteed to enter an engineering program at another school.

Definitely keep this in mind. No guarantees that you'll be accepted into the Engineering School once you get here. You don't want to regret anything later on...

well I'm cool with being a bio major or something. I honestly have an extremely hard time imagining myself anywhere besides UCLA. Whenever I think another school is my first choice, I always find some con about it and come back to UCLA. I'm just really scared that I won't get in in the first place. Besides, I want to go on to medical school anyways, so getting into eng. might actually be a bad thing. So can anyone rate me now for getting into a non-UCLA engineering school please?

thanks

You were planning on an engineering major as a pre-med?!?

That's just....so....suicidal

ekn111 can you explain that for me please? That's the track I'm planning on DX

That's a horrible idea. Engineers are known for their low GPAs.

why kill yourself before med school if you're gonna kill yourself IN med school...
just curious, why do you want to do engineering and med school? they seem to be two completely different tracks, leading to two different types of careers. do you want a job in an engineering field, or medical profession? i really don't see how they overlap. perhaps you can tell me the basis for your decision?

hey california_love8 ,
My dad did the same thing when he was in college. He majored in chem. engineering I think, but he got into med school. He said that he just wanted a back-up plan if he didnt get into med school. Also, the reason he picked engineering as a major is that he said that engineers make the most money initially out of college.

In all honesty, I don't know if a composite of 30 will significantly help your chances. It can't hurt, but I don't think it will push you over the edge, either.

30 composite correlates to a 1900 SAT score doesn't it? Thats still lower than the ~2000 or so that is UCLA's average (a 32 is 2040). Certainly being OOS will not help your situation although given your pretty huge list of ECs, you might be able to pull it off.

UcMichigan, your dad did the same thing I'm hoping to do. My parents haunted me with visions of making barely minimum wage with a bachelor's in biology (more traditional path to med school I guess) and job insecurity with a PhD, should I not get into med school. I thought BioE or ChemE were at least pertinent to med school so I wouldn't have to take that many extraneous classes for the MCAT.
