chances from out of state

UMD seems like a great school. My son is a junior and we were considering visiting this week, but I don't want to waste time if he definitely has "no shot" - can anyone please advise? Sorry I don't know much about the school's admittance policy - is it much harder to get in from OOS? We are in CT and here we know that getting into UVA or U of FL is harder than getting into Harvard. Is it the same with UMD? Thanks!

About 30% of Maryland students are from OOS, just to give you a perspective. Out of an undergraduate class of 25,000–that’s a considerable amount.

Thank you for your quick reply. That is a lot of students but are they all the top of the class? Is there a chance for a B student; SATs in the 1300/1900 range; lots of community service, school spirit, extracurriculars, but no AP classes or varsity sports? In other words, a great kid with a good head on his shoulders but an average student?

UMD only looks at CR + M scores.
1300 is worth a try.

no not all are at the top of their class
i was at the top 15% of my class and my SATs were in the 1800s and I was accepted…
i supposed if you’re in the top quarter of your class then you should be fine.
Everything seems fine, you sound like you’re in but the fact that you didnt take ANY APs MIGHT be a problem…

It’s not a problem if your school doesn’t offer them though.

From the ‘Rejected, but confused…’ thread OP:

A few things I see in the post above. This person is:

 1. In state with great/above average stats. Still got ‘waitlisted’/spring semester-ed. This person had their academics down pat, but he/she still got waitlisted, which may suggest that Maryland looks beyond academics and looks at the things your son shines at - extracurriculars, community service, etc.
 2. Applied engineering, which is one of those closed majors. A lot depends on the major you applied to at UMD. Which major is your son interested in?
 3. Accepted at U Mich, waitlisted at Johns Hopkins… waitlisted at Maryland? In my opinion, Johns Hopkins is a much more competitive school, so being waitlisted there is an accomplishment. I would therefore assume fall acceptance to Maryland but… guess not. My point: Admissions is crazy process. Hard to know what a school is looking for… so I wouldn’t say absolutely ‘no shot’ for your son.

About the no APs thing, did you son take the most competitive schedule he could? A lot of colleges stress that… If AP classes were available, and he didn’t take the opportunity, I believe admissions looks down on that.
