I took Latin I extracurricularly (is that a word?) my sophomore year because it wouldn't fit into my schedule.
Given my blocks being filled with Band and debate all four years, I have otherwise maxed out all possible departments from my school with the exception of a couple science IIs. (Bio and physics)

US History AP
Chem 2 (If AP is available then I'm taking it, I don't remember)

Extra Curriculars

School Based

Top Jazz band senior year. Lettered for last two years.

*Debate/forensics *- Competed on the Varsity level for sophomore and junior year. Took first in a few tournaments. Competed on the national circut for a few tournaments. 8th at state.

Kansas Young Democrats - Founding President. Will have events this fall for voter registration and fund raising for area congressional candidates

Boys' State of Kansas - Ran for Governor. (lost by 5 votes!)

Boys' Nation - Qualified to be one of 98 to meet at Boys' Nation in D.C. later this summer. Bill Clinton went to Boys' Nation and met (then) President Kennedy. Terrific learning experience. I really look forward to it.

Will be active volunteering for campaigns this fall.

Service

200+ volunteer hours working at a hospital. Work in the Admitting department. Checking in preregistered patients, and taking them to rooms. Received Presidential Service Award.

National Honor Society - Head of several committees. A very active service organization. We host rock concerts, events for young kids, and general fundraisers. All profits is for charity.

Started an elementary Debate club program. Very basic as of yet.

No sports, unless you count debate.

I am working at a law firm for a paid internship this summer for a few weeks. Besides that, no work experience.

"Hook"

I love politics. Most of my time is spent reading news/books. Because of this, i can expect excellent rec letters from government and history teachers. I want to major in Poli Sci.

Also, I am fairly liberal, Kansas is not. I plan on doing some pretty cool event type things early this fall for the national and state general elections. This will hopefully stir up some media attention. But i can't really plan that.

I feel like my interview will be very good. Thanks to debate (yay pretty speaking!), and my passion for what i want to study.

And factor in applying ED to Columbia.

I was planning on doing EA to Gtown, but that doesn't help me. Although I have visited Gtown and like it (especially the idea of being in DC), Columbia is a better school academically, and they still have the UN in town. Ideas/comments/advice?

Might as well throw in Tufts, Emory, and Cornell

bump

your resume is as good or more likely better than mine, and I got into Georgetown EA. I'd say you'd be competetive at almost any university. Don't worry about your SAT's so much for Georgetown, because they only look at CR+M (which for you is 1510). Are you applying to the collegeor SFS? If it's the college I'd say your chances are very good.

Someone else would have to comment on the other schools.

u won't get in anywhere cuz i'm applying there, lol jk
ur fine for all teh schools

keep in mind that Uchicago & Gtow are very preppy schools, so i would visit them b4 making any decisions

Columbia will be a high reach, but you look great for Georgetown.

Columbia: Please. You'd have a better chance by being struck by lightning.
Georgetown: IN.
Tufts: IN.
Emory: IN.
Cornell: IN.

DCforMe:

I am applying to the College. The SFS sounds amazing, but I screwed up with foreign languages in high school. I took Latin my sophomore and junior year, and I am going to switch to Spanish for senior. I recall that SFS requires, or encourages, a SAT II score in the language that you want to take. That counts me out.

cholula:

I have only visited Georgetown and UChicago (and Northwestern actually). So I guess I have only seen preppy. I didn't mind what I saw. What would you say Columbia is? Perhaps UPenn?

lolcats4:

What separates Columbia from Georgetown so drastically?

Same question as lolcats to Harvardian.

And Harvardian specifically, what Ivies do you think I could get into?

Columbia is actually not preppy. I go there for SHP and am doing research there this summer. Everyone here seems more down to earth, whereas the others, where students are (in my opinion) stuck up b/c they think they have achieved something

FF, Columbia is far more selective than Georgetown. You seem focused on getting into any Ivy can you get into. I wouldn't apply to an Ivy school unless you've done the research and know that it's a school that you want.

For example, you may not know it, but Columbia has a very thorough (and some people might say restrictive) Core curriculum. This is of course why I'm applying, but you may not like the idea of such a program...

lolcats:

I can understand how you could reach that conclusion, but I was only asking for comparative purposes. I figure that I might as well know my chances. I won't necessarily apply everywhere. Georgetown is where I have researched the most. That said, more research is never a bad thing.

Is Columbia's CC similar to UChicago's? I like the requirements they have there.

Does any one have any thoughts about Uchicago chances?

I'd say you have an alright chance. The 25-75 ACT stats at UChicago are like, 30-33. So your ACT looks strong, combined with the political stuff and band/drum major, should be somewhat comfortable, I'd say.

From what I've heard about Columbia/UChicago CC, they look pretty similar. A lot of classic literature and stuff. I'm looking at both of those schools, too.

Aaaaand, that comment by Harvardian is why I'd never go to Harvard in a million years.

fastfood,
a)if you apply EA you don't really have to have much of any SATII scores, even if SFS, so if that's the only thing holding you back you could apply EA and not worry about it. But your EC's and interests seem to line up with the college much better anyway
b) The college unfortunately still requires four semesters of a language, so your journey with language isn't over just yet. I feel your pain, as I study for my placement test now, not having taken Spanish in over a year.

DCforMe:
I'm assuming because you joined in December of 07 you got in EA? What scores did you send them?

Well, I sent them 2240, 35, and 800 on Math II and 790 on USH. But if browse the Georgetown forum you find plenty of EA admits with one or none SATII's.

DCforMe:

I hope I get SAT II scores like yours! That would make admission a lot more comfortable. I should look into the SFS EA though. Are you going into the SFS?

Does anyone have specific thoughts about Columbia or UChicago? Any current students?

Thoughts on UChicago/Columbia ED?

I read that for Columbia ED makes the chances go from ~10% to 24%. That's pretty significant.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a school with a strong government dept.

^^^^ bump for question above
