Schools:
Reaches:
Georgetown
Columbia
U Penn
Harvard
Stanford
Johns Hopkins
Brown
UNC (oos)
UVA (oos) (Jefferson Scholarship)
Wash U

Matches:
U Chicago
Tufts
Vanderbilt

Safeties:
George Washington
UGA

I want to major in International Relations and minor in East Asian Studies. I want to go to Columbia for grad school and become a foreign service officer.

I would like to know my chances, and narrow this list down. I'd like to get it down to 10 if I could. Any reccomendations or suggestions...Thanks.

umm ur reaches can become slight reaches and even matches (Wash U, UVA, UNC, JHU) if u raise SAT up to at least 2250+, preferrable 2300 +. standard/good ECs. u have great ambitions...keep them up and good luck!

UChicago is not a match for you.

Given current stats, here's how I'd consider you:

Reaches:
Georgetown
Columbia
UPenn
Harvard
Stanford
JHU
Brown
WUSTL
UNC
UVA

Low Reaches:
Chicago
Tufts
Vanderbilt

Matches:

None

Low Matches/Safeties:
the other two listed

Your list is very top heavy, so I'd consider condensing the reaches down and finding some matches that you'd truly be happy at.

Your GPA, courseload, and ECs are great, but the test scores are low for the reaches. Try the ACT or redo SAT for a better shot. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.
My list is so top heavy because I really like George Washington, and I would be really happy there, so I figured I don't need to apply to any schools other than that for safeties (UGA is just b/c it's my state school and my parents want me to).
Also, I got a 31 on the ACT if that helps any.
I will be retaking the SAT again this year, I don't think I'll retake the ACT (bad idea?).

In that case, I think your list is good. Mine is very similar in that I have an ultimate safety school that I really like and the rest are matches/reaches. With GW and UGA on your list, I think you've got enough safeties and should go wild on the apps to the most difficult schools. Good luck!

you need SATIIs or you wont get into any of your top choices. they will throw out your application because it will just be like not taking the SATs. it's a requirement. having said that, your 31 ACT is better than the SAT score (i think, i dont know how they translate too well). if you ACT is fine, then dont send your SAT scores. colleges look at both equally.

because your list is so big, i would suggest dropping stanford. it's your only west coast school and your chances of getting in arent the best (but you have an ok shot with good SATIIs). it also lacks the common app which saves some time (but 6 of your schools use it). i think your chances a the uva scholarship are low with the ACT and GPA not being near perfect (but still good enough for a shot at getting into uva). overall, i would say to look at your reaches. because you want IR keep georgetown, tuffts, gw and hopkins. for UPenn apply to the huntsman program (business and foreign relations stuff). i hope you know that GW is one of hte most expensive colleges in the country. its about 50k a year. try finding a match that is a bit more cost affective.

Thanks for all of the advice, I will eventually take the Chemistry, MathII, and Spanish SAT II's. Do you think I could qualify for any of the scholarships at GWU?

What exactly defines a match? I always it was a school you had about a 50/50 chance. I thought the reaches were places you were more likely to get rejected than accepted; a safety was a place you were very likeyly to get in, and a match was a place where your chances were 50/50. Maybe not?

are you really so arrogant as to believe that UChicago is a match for you? that's funny.

a match is a school with a SOLID 50/50+ chance

umm okay ramses88...you could have just told me it wasn't.

anyways, which of these schools have the common app.? Is there somewhere that lists all of the schools with the common app.?

here's the list of colleges that accept the common application:
