Do I have a good shot at UVA? I know out of state is really tough.. Need to improve any areas? Any general advice? Thanks for help!

How many points is an AP class worth if your GPA is already 5.5 and rising?

With that GPA and unweighted GPA, I’d say your high school has a bad problem with grade inflation if those are your numbers and 8% of your classmates are ahead of you.

As an out of state applicant, nobody can really give you a good idea of your chances at UVA. It’s a crapshoot.

Stopping the genocide in Syria…important.
Turning around the broken global economy…important.
Ending world hunger…important.
Stopping the Jerry Sanduskys of the world and anyone who would abuse children…imporant.

Keeping “Chance Me” post out of the UVA sub forum…nope…not even a little bit important.

Frederich, I see you are a new member! Welcome to CC. As you’ve noted, UVA is extremely competitive for OOS students. It is extremely competitive for instate students as well.

There are some wonderful resources here on this forum (Dean J being one of them), but the more credible people here (in my opinion) do not comment on chance threads. They are happy to give you information and answer your questions, but anyone who “chances” you is without authority to determine whether or not you are admitted. Their opinions as to your chances of admission are pretty meaningless.

I’d encourage you to come here to ask questions about the University, you’ll get a lot of help with that. None of us, other than Dean J, are admissions officers (to the best of my knowledge). UVA takes a holistic approach to admissions and looks at the entire package a student presents. Grades are always going to be more important than SAT or ACT scores. Did you take the most challenging curriculum you were able to? Excel in those courses? Participate in extracurriculars, emphasizing depth over breadth? If that’s the case, keep doing what you’ve been doing! Good luck with your application and I hope you’ll come back with additional questions.

I’m not a credible member of the site, so please take my opinion that I cannot give you a good idea of your chances at UVA with a grain of salt.

I mean…I’d hate for you to put too much stock into that.

And since I agree that Dean J is the only person qualified to give you an opinion, and she isn’t going to, you aren’t going to find any credible opinions here at the site.

Don’t obsess with it. Live your life and do what you love. But take that advice with a grain of salt, as my response to your original post leaves me not a credible member.
