Chances getting into USC

I am a African American Female from California my school is in the top 200 for the best schools in the nation. I started going there my sophmore year so my grades dropped that year so it brought down my gpa a bit. Also i am from a single parent household
GPA: 3.6 uw 3.8w
SAT: 2180
SAT2: 750/740/700
Extracurriculars:
Medical Explorer
School Newspaper
Cancer research center volunteer
Drama tech crew
track and field
teaching internship
dance
Hospital volunteer

i'm pretty sure you'll get in. you being african american will help a lot. you've got pretty good sat scores.

SAT scores are good. ECs are good, not extraordinary. GPA is decent, but one of the weaker parts of your application. Being African American helps. Your school is tough... everyone says this and it doesn't mean anything, it only means something if USC knows it. You probably have a bit better than average chance of getting in... probably around 60% chance of getting in.

What do you qualify as extraordinary EC's?

Doing one or two things a lot, really passionately. She seems to be doing a large variety of stuff, and not anything with passion (except perhaps medicine-related activities... which now I look again she has done a bit of.) It's hard to tell when you just list the activities, and not how long you have done them or how many hours a week you put in. So basically I guesstimated ;)

I agree it is hard to tell when you just list the activities, but I mean some people really do have a lot of interests...I wish my ec's were as diverse-- and volunteering at a cancer research center? who says that's not a passionate thing to do?

Well... that could be taking out the garbage from the research center, helping out cancer patients, or helping a researcher prepare samples... it could be tons of things. Its really hard to judge with no description.

i help researchers prepare data about the lifestyles of people who have cancer

I'd be pretty shocked if you were rejected. 90-95% chance of acceptance.

So what do some other people think are my chances of getting into USC?

I'm going to stick with 60%, just so she doesn't get her hopes up and then get them dashed :). You have a good chance of getting in though.

i'd say your chances are high but you really can't gauge the likeliness of you getting accepted by just this. i mean, not that college acceptances are completely random, there's a pattern obviously, but the fact is, you really don't know.

my friend got 2280 on his sat's, was in the top 10% of my school, got above 750 on all three of his sat 2's, was a full ib student, got stellar grades senior year (4.67 if i remember correctly), pretty much took every single hard class available at the school, had a job, had pretty damn good ec's, but didn't get in.

being in the top 10% in my school's a pretty big deal (equivalent to being top ranked in other schools) and usc knows our school pretty well. i think 40 people got in... or something like that. haha too bad he wasn't one of them.

haha he got into other schools harder to get in to compared to sc but he really wanted to go to sc because he wanted to party. haha.

anyways. my point is, you really don't know. there's nothing you can do about it now so whatever happens, happens! there's a reason everything happens in life :D at least, at this point in time, that's what i'm trying to tell myself :).

Jeebus maybe something got lost in the mail?

does being mexican american help at all? :]

I forgot to mention that i had a medical problem during my sophomore year that contributed to my grades lowering will they consider that?

haha sadly i think being any ethnicity other than caucasian and asian is beneficial.

honestly dreams, nothing we tell you is really actually "true." true as in none of us are reading and judging your application and none of us are the actual people making the decisions. with small details like that, no one can really tell what will or will not help you.

i'm sure it's probably beneficial that you can explain it but as long as your grade drops weren't drastic, it'll be fine because usc is a pretty forgiving school. relax :). there's nothing you can do now.

hahaha i say all this but i can't help but stress myself..

Dreams16, you have very good stats and you are almost guaranteed admission to USC. A question: did you qualify for the National Achievement scholarship? If you become a finalist, you are likely to receive USC's Presidential Scholarship, which pays 1/2 tuition.

It seems to me you have a good shot of getting in, however, I'm a little biased on this because I believe that anyone with better stats than I do should be allowed to go to USC since I already got my acceptance letter

you should be fine.

your GPA is right on the borderline and ur SAT is above average. Decent EC's as well. Being a Mexican should help

what activities during the summer do you think i should do to improve my chances to getting in?
