My GPA used to be really low. But I raised it to a 3.06 UC GPA so I can be eligible. I live in California. I go to a Distinguished Public High School.School.

MY SAT 2's - US Hist. - 510 Literature - 610 Physics - Takin in November.

Extracurriculurs - 4 YEARS IN ONE CLUB WITH LEADERSHIP POSITION.
Basketball, Tennis, Track.
National Society of High School Scholars.
Senior Services in community.

Keep in mind that I will apply with an unpopular major such as East Asian studies, or Women studies maybe.

Colleges I want to go to.

UCD, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UCSC, UCLA.
Calstate Long Beach and CalPoly Pomona and SanLuisObispo for safety.

UC Berkeley/UCLA: Huge Huge Reach (Forget about it)
UCSD: Huge Reach (Forget about it)
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Slight Reach

Hate to break it to you bro, but Cal Poly SLO is deffiantly not a safety for you, nor even a match. It is a Reach. Its admission stats are approx equivalent to UCI/UCSB/UCD. Cal State Long Beach is deffiantly not your safety either as I would say it is a match-slight reach. I would say Cal Poly Pomona is likely a match. You need some safeties or safe matches, possibly CSU San Marcos, or some other mediately ranked Cal State Universities.

If you were accepted, which one would you choose? Make that your first choice...and then include 2 more you feel you are more likely to get into based on your gut...you know which ones they are...then if you have additional $$$ for the application fees, include more. Be sure to include a couple of Cal State schools, too.

UCLA: Big Reach
UCSD: Big Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: I would say reach b/c your gpa is hurting, but my friends at my hs have gotten into these UCs with these sats
UCSC: Slight Reach
Pomona: Match

Thanx so much for the feedback.
But my counselors and close friends at the universities have repeatedly told me that UCD and UCSB should be no biggy for me if I apply with an unpopular major.

davis, irvine and santa barbara are the mid-tier UC's and a 3.1 GPA probably won't cut it.

to have a good shot at these mid-tiers, you need at LEAST around a 3.6 GPA, 1800 SATI and 1250 SATII combined; and even still that may not be enough.

I dont think prospective major will influence your admission at all. Maybe if you apply for middle eastern studies, and you had actual spent time in the middle east it would, but just throwing it out in the air wont give you an advantage.

UCLA : Big Reach
UCSD, Cal Poly Slo: Medium Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: I would say reach b/c your gpa is hurting, but my friends at my hs have gotten into these UCs with these sats
UCSC: Slight Reach
UCR/Pomona: Match, with a small possibility of being rejected
Long Beach: Match/Safety

These are mostly formula based places, and even at UCR and UCSC the average GPA is 3.4. Nearly everyone was in the top 10% of their class. Now, this doesn't make you completely out of the UCs, but you'll take some luck getting into the mid-level ones.
Youll need some more safety/matches

Actually, I'm going to disagree with a few people with this response.
Your chances in my view:
UCSC/UCR/UCM--Match
UCI/UCSB/UCD with unpopular major--Match to Slight Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD with popular major--Slight Reach
UCSD with unpopular major--Slight Reach
UCSD with popular major--Reach
UCB/UCLA--Reach (major doesn't matter)
Cal Poly SLO--Reach (they don't really have any unpopular majors)
Cal Poly Pomona--Match

cal poly slo's admission stats are equivalent or slightly below mid tier UC's (uci/ucsb/ucd). im not sure why people are putting it on the same level or even higher than ucsd, ucla and uc berkeley, and below uci/ucsb/ucd. nothing against cal poly slo, its a great school and my sister went there, but the admission averages for admitts, i believe, was a 3.7 and less than 1800 sat. these stats arent even close to berkeley, ucla and ucsd. the top 3 uc's have averages well above 4.0 and sat's of 1950 for ucsd and over 2000 for ucla and berkeley.
Also, there is no way that mid tier uc's are a match-slight reach, even with unpopular majors. that is completely unrealistic, as is it that ucsd is a slight reach, even with an unpopular major. the posters uc gpa is 3.06. come on guys. that is not gonna get someone into a mid tier uc unless their sat is very very good, and deffiantly not getting the poster into ucsd, as making ucsd a slight reach is way way off. Cal Poly SLO should have the same odds of admitting the student as uci/ucsb/ucd. if anything, the posters chances would be slightly better at cal poly slo than at uci/ucsb/ucd, not worse. im not sure how someone could put the posters odds as the same or even better at being accepted to ucsd/ucla/berkeley than at cal poly slo.

UC Berkeley/UCLA: Huge Huge Reach (Forget about it)
UCSD: Huge Reach (Forget about it)
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Slight Reach
Cal Poly SLO: Reach
CSULB: Match-Slight Reach
Cal Poly Pomona: Match

"UCSB, UCSC, and UCR are a reach?? I doubt it. But thanx for the reply. Please reply more thanx."

I only said UCSB was a reach. I stated UCSC and UCR were a slight reach. And yes, UCSB's average freshman admit stats were over a 3.9 last year and over an 1800 sat. you have a 3.06. im not sure how you think you would be just fine getting in their. your friends, who told you what that you would be just fine for ucsb and ucd, unfortuantly, are quite mistaken on your odds. but i do wish you best of luck, and your opptomism will only help you. i just am trying to help you be realistic of your odds of realisticly getting into the schools that you listed.

Your SAT of 1760 is average; your low GPA is going to really hurt, and at the very least try to score a second SAT 2 above 600. The fact that you are a resident does help your chances slightly. Lastly, the major you choose does not affect your chances of admission in the UC system at least (with the exception of Engineering.)

Again, I have to reiterate this: contrary to popular belief, the major you choose DOES NOT affect your admission decision.

Again, good luck with the admissions process!

I took the Princeton college match quiz and they said I was a match for UCSB, UCSC, and UCR. Also the stats on collegeboard show that they accept about 20% of people with 3.0 to 3.25 which is a lot. So I think maybe ucchris mite be a little too harsh on his scale. Also my counselor was the one who told me about my chances in UCSB UCSC and UCR.

I would not trust Princeton College Match. It just told me that I was nearly a 90% match for not only UCLA, but also UCSD; both of which I was not accepted, and now looking at my stats, I have realized that those two schools were a Reach for me.

On another note, while it told me that I was a 90% match for UCLA/UCSD, it told me I was only a 73% match for UC Riverside...ummm yeah.

When you do that, are you sorting them by "Good Match" or are you also looking at "Sort Schools That match My SAT/GPA Score"?

You need to sort the schools based on your SAT and GPA. Simply looking at ""Good Match...Reach...and Safety Schools" without sorting is not accurate, and I believe the percentages produced are based on the responses you provided when you told Princetonreview.com what you are looking for in a college (excluding grades and test scores).

I stand with UCChris's evaluation of your stats.
