Chances...G'town, Harvard, Northwestern...

What do you think my chances are?
I'm a white, catholic male; junior; from Georgia:

Academics:
GPA- 3.78
SAT- 2100 (750 Math, 680 Reading, 680 Writing; I'm retaking though because I've only taken once.)
SAT IIs- None yet, but I'm taking math (predicting a 750 or so), Chemistry, Biology, and spanish.
Class Rank- My school doesn't give them, but I'm pretty sure top 15%
After graduation, I will have taken 10 APs (Calculs BC, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, US History, Human Geography, English Language, English Literature, Spanish, Spanish Literature) and 8 honors classes (English I, English II, Geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Precalculus, Biology, Chemistry).

The Play (theatre)- Secretary

I went on a Walkabout (my schools outdoor club) trip to India (trekking) and on one to Costa Rica (kayaking)

Applying to (sort-of in order):
Harvard/Georgetown
Columbia
Northwestern
George Washington/American
Tufts/Boston University
Syracuse
U Georgia (backup)

I attend a fairly prestigious school, Baylor School. It's very prestigious in the south. It's also relativley competitive.

What do y'all honestly think my chances are. I really want to go to Georgetown.

if you get your sat up, which i imagine you will, and show a strong interest in georgetwon, you could definitely go there.

you are from georgia and you are actually smart - WOW

^^^that's not nice, but I'm not from Georgia so I could care less

i wish you all the best, but no chance at harvard, georgetown, columbia or northwestern. one would say that your numbers may fit into the middle range of georgetown's numbers, but g'town is a very hot school right now and their acceptance rate is sooo low. the lower half of the g'town numbers probably comprise the student body that bring certain hooks with them. you never know, but i wouldn't get my hopes up.

he got a 2100 his first time!
dont listen to blacknblue. you can definitely get in if you put your mind to it. visit, have a bunch of interviews, etc,etc

sure, don't listen to me, listen to the peeps with over 2200 on the sat's and 3.8+ who got deferred from g'town...early action!!! you better do way better if you wan't g'town and you better get a professional sat test taker to take the next sat for you if you really want harvard or columbia. syracuse is a fun place i hear.

ok that sucks. im sorry to hear that. did you pursue g town a lot i.e. interviews, visits, etc?

Not yet...haha...but I plan on visiting and interviewing alot this summer and my senior year. Haha and I have no expectations for Harvard or Columbia. Hopefully I will have really good recs and essays for Northwestern and G'town. Thanks for all the replies though!

Also thought, about GWU and American, would yall say those are matches, reaches, or backups. I was thinking more of matches, but I don't know.

HEY JJJJ!
Though I am not a genius I have plenty of friends who are and we go to PUBLIC schools in Georgia! THree of my friends got 2400s. One is already accepted to Princeton, one to Harvard, and the other got the Ramsey Scholarship for UGA and will go on to compete for Fellowship (and yes I am jealous and proud of all of them). THough I do admit there are Very unintelligent people in Georgia, there are also many smart people.
Oh and ubetteraccept_me, take the SAT again, show interest in all the schools you apply to and you may just get into some great schools. THere is no textbook way to get into the school it all depends on who applies and what they are looking for that specific year. All the advice I have is to say that you need a hook that will make you stand out drastically from the other applicants.

Oh maybe the fact that I did a summer program at Georgetown will help...hopefully.

I'm a pretty darn good kayaker (not to brag), can I send in like a video of that or something? Would that even help?

geniusgen

cool your jets - it was a joke. i live in florida. we are like family!

hey genius, doesn't ubetteraccept_me wish he were a friend of yours at this point?

^^^
i can tell that discussing g town with you is a bad thing. im sorry about saying that - i hope you get in RD. it IS possible

Your SAT scores add up to 2110. Chances = 0.

I got into GTown with a 2230. From reading the EA decisions on that board, it seems like SATs were of some importance. I would raise it since there's only going to be more applicants next year, but you've probably got a pretty good shot.

American, Syracuse, and BU are all safeties, GW may get moved in to safety territory if you can bump up your SAT. and Tufts will probably like you because you're pretty smart and not from Massachusetts. Harvard, Columbia are definitely both reaches, and I really don't know jack about Northwestern.

Honestly, I think if you can show that you are unique/special in any way, then you have a chance at all schools.

The 2100 is on the lower side, but 2100s were accepted this year and they will be accepted for many years to come.

Haha I can't type.

I forgot to mention Johns Hopkins as one of my choices.

On a chances thread that I posted to someone with similar stats:

"I think people are being overly optimistic. Having a so-so GPA and less than stellar SAT scores is a deadly combination at the super competitives. I recall Brown accepts 8% of those in the top 6%-10% class rank range; I am sure the others are similar. Even 8% may be a gross overestimate as athletes and URMs probably fill many of those slots. People underestimate the importance of GPA and tend to dwell on SAT scores."

Harvard - super reach
Georgetown - reach
Columbia - super reach
Northwestern - reach
GWU/American - match
Tufts: reach
BU: match
Syracuse: ? (safety?)
U Georgia: safety

Thanks for all of the replies so far, but just out of curiosity when you all say "so-so GPA and less than stellar SAT scores," is that referring to others applying to similar colleges, or is that reffering to everyone?

That is compared to those applying to similar colleges. A 2100 SAT is ~96th - ~97th percentile; it is nothing to be ashamed of. You are also performing better than 90+ percent of your class; again, that is very good. But just given the applicant pool, it is tough to be optimistic when you are in the "middle of the pack" (relative to others applying).
