Sara306, to begin with, this post seems too dull and nobody posting a thing.
Anyways, you seem to havea fair chance but for the SATs so Bates seems a good bet for you. Ayways, you have a safety in your bag unlike me who is really bogged up with the thought of not getting in anywhere.

goodluck with your applications.

btw, where did u apply ED and what happened?

I can't comment on your chances but did notice your interest in debate and wanted to mention that for a small LAC Bates has an unusually strong and successful debate program. (Perhaps other schools on your list do as well?) In case you're interested, here's a link to a recent news article about Bates's success this fall at tournaments at Oxford and Cambridge. http://www.bates.edu/x62228.xml

athletics: colgate is div.1 and hamilton is div.3

academics: hamilton has no requirements whatsoever (except p.e.) and their curriculum is heavily based on writing skills. Colgate has requirements.

location: hamilton-closer to everything! Colgate is further from life than hamilton....hamilton is only 10 mins from a mall,movies....etc Colgate is like 30-40 mins.

Both have nice campuses and are wicked cold, both have frats and sororities (though i think colgate has more frat and soror. involvement).....

Hamilton actually does have requirements which they do not explicitly talk about. You must take three full credit gym classes (or is it 6?). You must also have taken/passed three writting intensive classes by the end of your sophmore year. It does not matter if you decide to take all three during your first semester freshman year, Hamilton will only count one to ensure that you keep taking the writing intensive classes throughout the end of your sophmore year. The truth is most of your classes will be writing intensive and you will want to take them because they're so interesting.

I'm actually struck by how many people do not FULLY consider that Hamilton is in a rural town. By no means am I trying to deter anyone from coming here; I am merely speaking from experience. It blows here during the weekends when you want to get outside of campus and do something. You will realize that if you do not have a car, you're basically screwed. There is a jitney on campus that drives students to the mall and other parts of Clinton, but I mean let's get serious here. The jitney comes once every hour and is full of students you do not know and at times are disgusted by their conversations of vomitting or having sex with whoever last night. Alcohol defines the social scene here and if you don't drink you're screwed. The weather blows which makes the place even more depressing. Seeing the same faces over and over gets old and you will find yourself questioning whether or not you made the right decision with Hamilton. Trust me, I do it everytime. Additionally, there is a huge percentage of the student body here who are on anti-depressants. What do you think that says of the place? It's Disneyland? No. My recommendation is first visit Hamilton before choosing to come here. If you're used to the city, prepare yourself for the long, cold, and depressing winter.

Again, by no way am I trying to deter anyone. I was merely giving my own account of the place from experience.

Hi thanks for your opinion, I really liked Hamilton when i visited but the students did seem kinda standoffish and there seemed to be a lack of extracurricular activities. True? Where else did you apply? and why in the end did you pick hamilton? sorry to pick your brain but im just curious and want to make the right choice for college...........

Sara306, I applied to NYU, URochester, Colgate, UMichigan, and Hamilton. I got accepted to all of them. However, I chose to listen to my college counselors and "go where the money is." Of all the schools, Hamilton gave me the most financial aid. I would have been forced to go really indebt if I chose any of the other schools. Looking back, there is no doubt in my mind, I would have chosen Michigan. But that's just me.

Just comparing Colgate and Hamilton's locations, Clinton may be small, but the town of Hamilton (where Colgate is) in comparison to Clinton is much smaller and definitely more remote.

mensa160,
Did you decide that Hamilton wasn't a good school just by reading minorityman's post? Do you have other information you would like to share with us?

I'm heard some bad things about the social life at Hamilton. Then again, I feel that your comment about the anti-depressants is a gross exaggeration.

White Materia I thought the same as you when I first heard about the anti-depressants a good majority of the students are on. I could not believe it because I never saw it or thought I had no friends who were on them. Boy was I wrong. When I asked everyone about it, they all confirmed the statement and it really hit home when I found out two of my close friends were on them. But then again if you don't want to take my word for it, live among the students for a week. Remember, I advocate visiting the college first before attending. No one will tell you they're on anti-depressants because of embarrassment, but trust me, a lot of them are on it.

I am only giving an account of what I see on Hamilton everyday.
